Doris Kikuko Umemoto, affectionately known as Granny Doris, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2024, just shy of her 100th birthday. Born October 18, 1924, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Graduated from McKinley High School in 1942. She had a long and distinguished work career which included serving as Nurse's Aide at Straub Clinic from 1943-1945; clerk-stenographer at Territorial Department of Public Welfare from 1945-1948; Administrative Assistant at Health and Community Services Council of Hawaii from 1948 to 1986; Clerk at Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company from 1988 to 1993; and File Clerk at Human Resources Department for the City of Bellevue, Washington from 2000 to 2017. She then began a well-deserved, full-time retirement life at the age of 92.
Married Hiroshi Muramoto August 5, 1950. Together they raised a family in Kapahulu until his passing in 1972 when she became a single mother and continued to maintain the household while still working full-time. Granny will be reunited with Hiroshi at Punchbowl National Cemetery. Preceded in death by Hiroshi; sisters Helen and Chiyono; brothers Gilbert, Kenneth and Charles, and grandson Kiani Cockett. Survived by children Janice, Howard (Stannie), Lorna (Arnon), Myra (Neil); and grandchildren- Kaieo Cockett; Malie and Maika Fujii; Ilan and Gil Dreyfuss; Matthew Muramoto and great granddaughter Doris Lynne Cockett.
Relocated to Bellevue, Washington in 1993. She made many lifelong friends, and even continued her work career, before returning to Hawaii in 2020.
Granny Doris' belief in the Lord, Jesus Christ, was her saving grace. She always believed that God would get her through tough times, and amazing results would occur through God's grace. She was a devoted member of Olivet Baptist Church in Honolulu, and also Asian American Community and Newport Hills Community Churches in Washington. Granny touched people with her love, caring and generosity, always thinking of how she can be of service to others. Crocheting afghans was her passion and she gifted many of her wonderful creations over the years. She was compassionate and charitable.
Thank you for letting Granny Doris be a special part of your life, and know that she was always thankful for all of you blessing hers as well.
