Doris Myers was born March 31, 1938 in Loveland, Colorado. Her family moved to Simi Valley, California in 1940 where she was raised with her sister, Phyllis Miller Barnett by their parents Elton and Ozella Miller.
She went to Simi Valley High School and graduated class of 1956. She attended college and Moorpark College. She started working immediately after high school at Rocketdyne at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory.
In 1959, she married Dale Simmons, during their marriage, the two of them moved to Washington DC while Dale was in with in the military, and they later had one child, Duane Simmons, who was born May 29, 1967.
In 1975, she met her second husband, Don Myers. They married in 1976, around that time they moved to Henleyfield Mississippi as part of a transfer from Rocketdyne. They spent two years living in Henleyfield and then returned to Simi Valley, California.
During the 80s, she and her husband, Don opened an archery shop in Simi Valley with an indoor shooting range. They made a lot of friends during this time, many of which Doris was still in touch with through the end of her life.
Unfortunately, in 1990, she became a widow when Don passed away from complications of cancer.
She spent her spare time going to dinners and lunches with good friends, and Connie Luna, Valene Williams, Louise Courier, Rainie Hammerlee, and Penny Murphy. The group of friends even traveled several times on cruises to Alaska or across the country to various destinations.
She spent a lot of time with her son, every Saturday morning from 1994 on, they met for breakfast. This became a lasting tradition through the end of her life. They also spent a lot of time going out to nice dinners and traveling. She traveled with Duane and his husband, Scott Silzer to many different destinations, including Palm Springs, La Quinta, Paso Robles, New Orleans, and even on a fairly long journey to Munich, Prague, and Berlin.
She retired from Rocketdyne in 2006 and thoroughly enjoyed her retirement years and was happy to be able to do absolutely nothing if she chose to. She enjoyed her house, her friends, and spending time with her family. Sitting at home you would probably have found her watching a good game of golf or an old movie or musical.
In March 2023, she was sent to the hospital due to complications from pulmonary fibrosis. She was placed in a board and care facility in Simi Valley, and unfortunately, she was never able to regain enough strength to go back home. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 10, 2023 around 5 AM in the morning. She is survived by her son, Duane Simmons and her son-in-law, Scott Silzer.
A closed casket visitation will be held at Reardon Mortuary on Monday, August 21, 2023 from 7 PM to 9 PM. The graveside funeral services will be held at Oakwood cemetery in Chatsworth on Tuesday, August 22, 2023 at 10 AM.
