Doris Ann (Groth) Norby, aged 86, of Sidney, Montana, was brought home to God on Sunday, May 12, 2024.

Born on February 28, 1938, in Williams County, Williston, North Dakota, she was the daughter of Harold Groth and Myrtle (Rasmussen) Groth. Raised on a small family farm, Doris learned the values of hard work and community spirit early in life. It was here that she also became deeply involved in the church, establishing a strong foundation in her Lutheran faith and values that she carried into adulthood.

Doris was a cheerleader for the Grenora Gophers while attending high school in Grenora, North Dakota and continued being a cheerleader throughout life both with family and friends. She met the love of her life, Palmer Duane Norby, at a dance in Zahl, North Dakota. They married on July 3, 1955, in Bonetrail, North Dakota, and later moved to Sidney, Montana sharing 69 years of marriage filled with adventure and companionship while raising a family of five children whom she dedicated her time to all of their pursuits, dreams and journeys. Throughout their marriage, Doris was affectionately called “mother” by Palmer as a term of endearment because of all she did for her family.

Doris’ artistic talents were evident in her sewing of her children’s clothes and Halloween costumes, piano playing, and various crafts like macrame, needlepoint and quilting. Doris also served as the church secretary for Pella Lutheran Church, where she was cherished for her contributions and was especially appreciated for her piano playing at church services and ceremonies. She was also a gifted accordion player who shared her talents during family reunions and special events, often encouraging guests to engage in dancing to tunes like the shottish or the hokey pokey, bringing joy and laughter to all.

Christmas was a highlight each year when Doris played her piano with family gathered around to sing carols, filling their home with joy and song. During this time, the smell of her rosettes, krumkake and everyone’s favorite…peanut butter bonbons were staples that made the holidays unforgettable. She had a servant’s heart and was known for her unconditional love and acceptance, treating everyone with kindness and offering a warm, inviting smile.

Doris is survived by her loving husband, Palmer; their children, Vickie (Marc) Strouse, Lora (Donald) Bergerson, Kris Norby, Duane (Colleen) Norby, and Blake (Caleb) Lauritsen-Norby; along with nine grandchildren, Shane, Nicole, Jerimiah, Larissa, Duke, Chandi, Justin, Candy, Kayla and many, many great-grandchildren. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for her hugs, smiles, and the joy she brought to all who knew her.

Memorials in Doris' name may be sent to Pella Lutheran Church, 418 W. Main St., Sidney, MT 59270.
