Doris L. Kettwig was born May 1, 1929 in rural
Hazel, SD to Johann "John" and Anna (Luken) Kettwig. Growing up, Doris attended school at Brantford Country School through 8th grade and graduated from Hazel High School in 1946. After graduation, she began working as a clerk at Kresges Dime Store in Watertown. Soon, Doris was enrolled at Northern State Teacher's College where she obtained certification and taught in one-room country schoolhouses in Oxford and Graceland Townships. Doris began her career in banking at Community State Bank in 1966 and served the community in the Hazel branch until her retirement on her 65th birthday in 1994.
In 1947, at a Halloween program in Grover, Doris met Albert Schamens and they were married on August 29, 1948. Blessed from their union were three children: Dianne, Harley and Kathy. They lived and farmed north of Hazel, raising their children, until 1976 when they moved into the new home Albert built south of Grover. In 1986, they moved to Hazel. As residents of Hazel, Doris became involved with the town board, serving as Secretary and Treasurer for a number of years and was instrumental in helping build the new Community Center. She served as secretary of the Eastern Dakota 4H Rodeo for many years. Doris was an active member of the Grover Emmanuel Lutheran Church and many community organizations.
Doris was an amazing baker, cook and frequently fed a crew, never letting anyone go hungry. Many hours were spent in her large garden and then preserving the harvest canning. She also enjoyed quilting, crocheting and sewing, teaching her daughters and granddaughters many of these skills and creating special memories and mementos. From birthday treats, 4-H projects and holiday favorites, Doris had a way of making all these projects treasured memories. Doris enjoyed many years of retirement with Albert by camping, traveling around the country to visit relatives, playing cards and attending many activities supporting her children and grandchildren.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Dianne Rider and her husband, Jon; Harley Schamens; and Kathy Monnens, all of
Hazel, SD; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Survived by sister-in-laws Dorine Schamens,
St. George, Utah, and Virginia Schamens, Hastings, NE.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Albert; her parents, 3 brothers: Johnny Kettwig, Harvey Kettwig, and Raleigh Kettwig; and one sister, Lena McNamara.
Memorials will be directed to the Hazel Cemetery.
