Doris Stock Obituary

Doris Wharton Stock

August 31, 1927 - July 19, 2025

DECATUR - Doris Wharton Stock, 97, of Decatur, Ill., passed away peacefully on July 19, 2025, surrounded by family at her home.

Doris was born Aug. 31, 1927, to the late Raleigh Wharton and Pearl Siddens Wharton in West Township, Effingham County, Ill., creating fond memories on the family's grain and livestock farm. Her local education included the Mason Township one room schoolhouse, Gilmore School and the Altamont Community High School before graduating during World War II from Decatur High School at the age of 16.

After high school Doris enrolled in a two-year business program at Brown's Business College in Decatur and completed within one and one-half years all required courses except one, penmanship. She opted instead to begin her professional career at the National Bank of Decatur. Three years later, Doris joined the Prudential Insurance Company of America where she rose to become Office Manager of its Decatur and Mattoon, Ill., district office before retiring after more than three decades of service.

Doris married the love of her life, the late Maurice L. (Maurie) Stock, on Nov. 24, 1951, in Kinmundy, Ill. They shared nearly 25 happy years together until Maurie's death on Aug. 8, 1976.

Doris, known as Grandma Do to her grandchildren and G.G. to her great-grandchildren, and Maurie were the devoted parents of Keith (Cathy) Stock, Anita Mays, Brian (Karen) Stock, Lloyd Stock and Elane (Andrew Sullivan) Stock. In addition to her children, Doris is survived by grandchildren, Aaron Stock, Megan Stock Boos, Brett Stock, Alexander Stock, Christopher Stock, Joshua Mays, Aimee Stock Younker, Justin Stock, Brandon Stock, Matthew Mays, Stephanie Stock, Hilary Stock, Bridget Stock, Cole Sullivan, Pearl Sullivan and Leo Sullivan; as well as 19 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Doris was a remarkable role model for her family and all who knew her, navigating a successful professional career while, together with her husband, raising a strong and loving family.

Doris has been a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Decatur since 1951, faithfully attending Mass in person as well as online. Throughout her life, she pursued many personal interests and hobbies, including reading, gardening and yard work, flowers (particularly sunflowers), traveling and spending time with family outdoors and at her "Stock Roundup" family reunions, carefully selecting matching Christmas pajamas for each family member, enjoying crossword puzzles, gameshows and the news, St. Louis Cardinals baseball, hot cocoa and crochet, often finishing an afghan blanket in a week to gift to family and friends.

She was predeceased by her younger brothers, Raleigh Eugene "Gene" Wharton and Morris D. "Billy" Wharton; and her son-in-law, Randy Mays.
