Funeral Service for Dorothy E. Holmes age 88 of Plainview, Nebraska will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 2, 2026, at Congregational United Church of Christ in Plainview, Nebraska with Joan Alexander officiating. Burial will be Pleasant View Cemetery in Plainview. Visitation will be 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, February 1, 2026, at Congregational United Church of Christ. Snider Memorial Funeral Home in Plainview is handling the arrangements. Dorothy passed away on January 29, 2026, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska. Dorothy Ellen Holmes was born on January 3, 1938, in Bloomfield, Nebraska to E.C. “Dick” and Ruth (Hultberg) Russell. She graduated from Plainview High School in 1956. On October 21, 1956, she was united in marriage to Dale Holmes in Plainview Nebraska. To this union four girls were born, Joan, Julie, Jean and Jackie. Dorothy was a homemaker, raising her children and helping take care of their farm. Dorothy will be remembered for her gift of hospitality and her delicious cooking. Dorothy had a strong faith and was a life-long 50+ year member of Stark Valley United Methodist Church in rural Plainview, until its closing. She was very involved in helping with Sunday School, Bible School, and choir. She was a current member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Plainview, a member of Women’s Society in the Methodist Church, Happy Homemakers, Purple Hat Ladies, and Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed genealogy, music, gardening, traveling, and most of all, her faith and family. Dorothy was a devoted wife and mother and treasured spending time with her family. She could often be seen in the stands at various school and athletic events and was best known as “Grandma Dot.”
Dorothy is survived by her daughters – Joan (Gaylyn) Alexander of Plainview, NE; Julie (Randy) Kembel of Aurora, NE; Jean (Mark) Walkenhorst of Wahoo, NE, and Jackie (Randy) Beaton of Fremont, NE; 10 grandchildren Nicole (Korey) Matoush; Brandi Alexander (fiancé Cory Miller); Jamieson (Samantha) Alexander; Justin (Chris) Elge; David (Kaylyn) Elge; Kristin (Daniel) Okallo; Jenny Elge; Josh (Mackenzie) Walkenhorst; Zach Walkenhorst; and Jordan (Mandi) Beaton. Dorothy was also blessed with 18 great-grandchildren: Leighton Medina; Pressley & Swayzey Alexander; Ronin & Veyda Matoush; Parker & Banx Alexander; Sophia & Isabella Elge; Mali & Luiza Elge; Sariah Jones; Zion Akinleye; Nathaniel Okallo; Lance & Kase Walkenhorst; Capri & Kinsley Beaton; brother- in-law Delford Kroeger; brother-in-law, Gerald (Janis) Holmes of Plainview, NE; sister-in-law Delores (Roger) Dozark of Denison, IA; and many family members and friends.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Dick and Ruth Russell; sisters Ruth Newill, Evelyn Kroeger; mother and father-in-law Gilbert and Nina Holmes, brothers-in-law Wilbur Jahn and Ronald Newill, niece Beverly Mack and nephew Richard Kroeger.
