Dorothy M. Houseman, a beacon of love and gentleness, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born on May 30, 1931, in Boston, MA, Dorothy's life was a testament to devotion, kindness, and the simple joys of family life.
A proud Bostonian, Dorothy met her beloved husband, Noble O. Houseman Jr., while working at a local retail store. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter until his passing in 1976. Dorothy's unwavering spirit saw her through the challenges of loss, as she lovingly raised her two daughters, Donna M. Houseman of Roslindale and Linda M. Costello, alongside her son-in-law Jimmy of Walpole. She took immense pride in her role as a mother, a foundation of support and encouragement for her children.
After her children were grown, Dorothy returned to the workforce, sharing her warmth with those she served at Liggett's Drug Store in Cleary Square. Her nurturing nature found another outlet at the New England Conservatory of Music's cafeteria, and later as a housekeeper at the Hyde Park Convalescent Home, where she worked for over ten years before retiring. Her dedication to her roles was matched only by the love she poured into every task.
Dorothy's heart truly belonged to her family. She was the cherished sister of the late Anna I. Gallagher and the loving "Nana" to Laura Meader and her husband Nick, Kevin Houseman, and Katelin Costello. Her joy multiplied with the arrival of her great-grandchildren, Hannah and Jackson Meader, who were the light of her life. Dorothy's presence at family gatherings, from summer BBQs to dance recitals, ensured that every moment was celebrated and every milestone cherished.
Her love for her family was paralleled only by her love for life's simple pleasures. Dorothy never missed a holiday celebration, ensuring that birthdays and festive occasions were marked with her signature warmth and care. She delighted in playing card games with her grandchildren, treating them to hot dogs at Castle Island, and rooting for the Red Sox. Her gentle spirit shone brightly as she never uttered a negative word about anyone, radiating friendliness to all who were fortunate enough to cross her path.
Dorothy's legacy is one of unconditional love and the gentle touch she left on the hearts of those she met. Her kind demeanor, friendly smile, and unwavering commitment to her family will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the many friends and relatives whose lives she touched.
In her passing, Dorothy M. Houseman leaves behind a legacy of love-a life beautifully lived and a family beautifully loved. Her memory will be treasured and her spirit forever woven into the fabric of the lives she so tenderly shaped. As we bid farewell to Dorothy, we celebrate a life that was truly devoted to the happiness and well-being of others, a life that will continue to inspire and guide us in the years to come.
