Dorothy Morgan Schultz was born in a house on Brook Street in Medfield on September 12, 1923. She was the youngest child of John and Gertrude Morgan, who emigrated to Medfield from Canada in 1911 with 6th grade educations and who both worked in the hat factory behind the half house they rented for more than 60 years. Dorothy spent a happy childhood in Medfield with her four siblings, and remembered going to Town Meetings with her father in the Town Hall and picking blueberries near what is now the swim pond. She also worked in high school at Lord's Department Store, and counted among her friends some of Medfield's beloved citizens, including former Police Chief Billy Mann and former Fire Chief Joe Ryan. Dorothy was an enthusiastic and competitive athlete, playing volleyball, basketball, and tennis until her mid-80s.
Dorothy met her husband, Frederick Schultz, just prior to World War II while working for the the bus company that transported people from Milford to Boston each day. Frederick was born and raised in Milford, and was stationed in Guam during the war. Dorothy wrote to Frederick every day, and when he returned home, they began courting in earnest. After marrying in 1947, Dorothy and Fred settled in a modest house on Spring Street, where they raised their family of four children in a close-knit neighborhood. Dorothy worked as a secretary at Medfield State Hospital and at Medfield Junior High School. She was proud to contribute to her children's education funds. Dorothy was active in scouting, serving as a Troop Leader for several years. She also volunteered as Secretary to the town's Parks Department for many years.
Dorothy had a sweet tooth, and made all kinds of treats for her family and friends that you don't often see home cooks make anymore, including sponge candy, taffy, candy apples, dozens and dozens of Christmas cookies, fudge, and nougat-stuffed dates.
Dorothy dearly loved her children and their spouses: Gretchen Schultz-Ellison (Richard Ellison) of Shrewsbury, MA; Konrad Schultz (Debbie Norton) of Brewster, MA; Ernie Schultz (Patti Schultz) of River Falls, WI; and Heidi Schultz (Robert Hickey) of Quechee, VT; as well as her grandchildren, Jared Ellison (Timea Hopp), Ella Schultz, and Kyle Chul Soo Hickey. Dorothy was thrilled to celebrate the birth of her great granddaughter, Zita Hopp-Ellison, in June.
Dorothy's family would like to thank Mom and Dad's neighbors and the citizens of Medfield for their loving embrace of our mother/grandmother for more than a century. It's a remarkable thing to live for 102 years in the same community, and we sincerely appreciate our neighbors and Dorothy's friends for bringing so much joy to her long life. If you would like to honor Dorothy's memory in some kind of tangible way, please donate to a local cause that brings meaning to your own lives.
