Obituary for Douglas Eugene Smitherman II.
It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas Eugene Smitherman II., affectionately known as "DougE "a nickname he earned as a child-and later as "DougE Fresh," a name that reflected his style and flair as he grew older. Born on March 6, 1977, to Douglas Eugene Sr. and Barbara A. (Brown) Smitherman.
DougE was a beloved son, father, brother, and friend. He graduated from McAlester High School in the class 1995, where his teachers couldn't believe how he maintained a 4.0 GPA despite missing many days of his senior year. His intelligence and natural talent stood out; DougE was a certified personal Trainer and worked for Gold's gym in Oklahoma City for two years, he then earned his RN nursing degree graduating in the top 1/3 of his class from Eastern Oklahoma State College. DougE was a compassionate and dedicated nurse, working at McAlester Regional Hospital, where he served as a charge nurse in ICU and Third floor North as well as the house supervisor. His patients loved him, and he was known as a great nurse who genuinely cared for those under his care. He also served as a traveling nurse in various hospitals across the state, touching many lives with his caring nature.
A talented athlete, DougE was a standout football player, known for his skill, passion, and love of the game. He was also known as the life of the party, his infectious humor, bright personality, and ability to make everyone laugh. DougE loved to dress well and always carried himself with style and confidence. At the Age of 12 DougE was crowned Mr. Oklahoma at the National NAACP convention in Detroit Michigan.
He enjoyed fishing as a hobby, He liked to make a friendly competition out of it, challenging those with him to see who could catch the biggest fish. DougE was also an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan, proudly cheering for his team through every game. DougE United and was baptized at a very early age at Mr. Nebo Baptist Church.
DougE was preceded in death by his father, Douglas E. Smitherman Sr., his Paternal grandparents Bland and Ruby Smitherman, Maternal Grandparents Edward E. and Johnnie Mae Brown, as well as an infant great-nephew, Kayson McGee.
He is survived by his mother, Barbara A. Smitherman of
McAlester, Oklahoma; his two sons, Ethan and Adden Smitherman, who were his greatest pride and joy; his sister, Donnetta Crosby, and brother-in-law, Dennis Crosby; Four Uncles Otis Smitherman, Alonzo Johnson, Edward E. Brown Jr. and Vincient Brown, Eight aunts Betty Brown, Connie Smitherman Marilyn Smitherman, Judi Smitherman, Stephanie Johnson Tonya Brown, Joan B. Williams and Karletta Walker. Two Nieces Lexus Curtis and Trinity Smitherman, Five nephews Clifvonte Gauldin De'Marre Johson, Deonte Crosby, Dylan Crosby, and Jayden Crosby. Three great-nieces and four great nephews. And a host of cousins, and friends who loved him dearly.
