In Loving Memory of Doug Darnell

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Doug Darnell, who departed this life on November 17, 2025, at the age of 89.

Early Life and Service

Douglas Edward Darnell was born on 11/22/1935 in Long Creek, NC, to the late William Henry Darnell and Annie Mae Kinley Darnell. He grew up in the community, attended North Mecklenburg High School, and then enlisted in the United States Marines. Doug served for 26 ½ years, which took him to many foreign countries as well as various locations across the United States.

Career and Community Involvement

After retiring from his military career, Doug worked for Piedmont Natural Gas and continued to contribute through various part-time jobs. He was a devoted member of Trinity United Methodist Church, actively participating in many outreach ministries. Doug often drove the bus for senior citizen trips and was honored with the Trinity United Methodist Men's Butch Hough Memorial Lifetime Achievement Award. One of his most profound spiritual experiences was the "Walk to Emmaus," which deepened his relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Family and Legacy

Doug is survived by his wife, Patricia Sharar Darnell; his children, James Darnell (Cathy), Donna Mills, Chris Carpenter (Beverly), and Cathy Carpenter; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a large circle of extended family and friends who mourn his loss. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, William (Billy) Charles Darnell and Calvin Darnell, sister, Sophia Gant, and a granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth Bennett.

Celebration of Life

A celebration of Doug's life will be held at 3:00 pm on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Charlotte, NC. Family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, and honor his long life beginning at 2:00 pm in the Family Life Center.
