Douglas Gaer Obituary

Doug was a humble, gracious man. One cold November day last fall he disappeared into his office and composed the following obituary. He didn't know he would be stricken with stage 4 cancer just six short months later. These are Doug's own words.

"This is my obituary, written in November, 2022. Unusual, yes, but factual, except for the exit date and cause of my final days.

Douglas Ford Gaer was an only child and was born March 23, 1947 to Cavender R. Gaer and Loretta B. (Peerman) Gaer from Cumberland. Doug was one of 225 babies born in the Massena Hotel. He attended C&M school and graduated in 1965 and went to Northwest Missouri State college after graduation.

In 1967, Doug married his high school sweetheart, Dixie Williams from Massena. They moved to Des Moines, where Doug worked in the accounting area of the home office of General United Life in West Des Moines until they moved to Lincoln, Neb. in 1974.

While in Des Moines, two children were born to the couple, Brett and Bethany.

Doug was employed by Lincoln Benefit Life and later, Allstate Life from 1974 until his retirement in 2008. During that time, Doug had several different jobs in various departments in the home office.

Two more children were born to Dixie and Doug during this time, Bradi and Blake.

Dixie and Doug were able to do some traveling over the years and enjoyed spending time at Lake Okoboji in northern Iowa. Doug liked to golf (was never very good), fish (never caught the big one) and spending time outdoors (not in cold weather). His enjoyment included being with his family of four children and five grandchildren."

Doug wrote his obituary in November of 2022. Much happiness blessed our family in the following months. Just weeks before his death, he was able to meet his newest grandson Miles and his first great grandchild Scarlett. Those left behind to cherish his loving memory are his wife Dixie; sons Brett (Amy Vitek) and Blake (Jessie Lee) Gaer; daughters Bethany (Jon) Smalley and Bradi Gaer; grandchildren Madeline Gaer, Michael Gaer, Meredith Gaer, Isabel Smalley, Monroe Smalley, and Miles Gaer; great-granddaughter Scarlett Anderson; treasured friends and relatives.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Oct. 14 in Greenfield, at the Lamb Funeral Home, 101 SE Fourth Street. A luncheon reception will follow at the Historic Hotel Greenfield, 110 E. Iowa Street. The hotel held a special place in Doug's heart. Over the years, he and Dixie spent many happy weekends staying there while visiting friends and family in the area. Please come and share fellowship and stories as we remember and honor Doug. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.lambfuneralhomes.com. The Lamb Funeral Home in Greenfield is in charge of the professional arrangements.

Nancy and are deeply saddened for the passing of Doug Gaer. Doug was a trusted and caring friend. He was wonderful human being who was always willing to extend a helping hand to others. I was incredibly fortunate to have Doug as a teammate in helping to build Lincoln Benefit Life. He was a strong leader with high emotional IQ who brought people together. At a time when our country and world seem to be growing more apart and hostile to each other, it is especially unfortunate to lose someone like Doug who was a unifier. My deepest regret is that I did not have a chance to re-engage with Doug recent years. Dixie, please accept our condolences for your loss but also take note the "light" Doug brought to everyone will forever shine.

My condolences to the family. Doug was a wonderful person and made it a point to come around and see how everybody was doing, especially during the holidays. His leadership was unmatched and we are all better people because of him! I am a better manager because of him. He will be missed. Rest peacefully.

My deepest sympathies to Dixie and the Gaer family. I am hoping you find strength and comfort during this difficult time. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
LBL was a great company because of Doug´s admirable leadership and motivating management style. Doug was an unequivocally good man whom truly cared for and respected every employee. Doug believed and uniquely managed knowing that a happy employee results in happy customers. Doug was a mentor to me and countless others, and truly made the world a better place to be. Godspeed, Doug.

Such a privilege to work with Doug. He listened with his heart, then did whatever needed to be done to make things better for his people.

Thank you, God, for giving us Doug. May eternal light shine upon him.

I worked many years with Doug. He was a great leader and a special man. He always made you feel appreciated. A co-workers check was short one time and it would take weeks to fix. They told Doug they couldn´t pay the electric bill. Doug had them bring him the bill and he went to LES and paid it. Also when they opened the New York department they were so overwhelmed that he came there many times and worked. He also made the rounds at holidays to stop and chat with everyone.

I worked with Doug for 27 years. Judging from all the wonderful comments on our LBL Facebook page, I was not the only one who is grateful to have known him. We all enjoyed his kind, caring, and empathetic leadership and sense of humor. He was a fantastic mentor. This world lost a wonderful soul and he will be greatly missed. My heart goes out to Dixie and all of his family and those who also held him dear. May happy memories help lessen your grief.

Doug was such an amazing leader as a VP at LBL where I was blessed to work with him for many many years! He genuinely cared for all employees and treated everyone as his friend, greeting you with a smile and wave! Always kind and humble, no one would guess him to be one of the company's VPs! Doug made work fun when he was around, always positive and could get you crying with laughter when sharing stories! RIP Doug & may your family and friends' hearts soon be filled with all the wonderful memories of joyful times together! You are all in my thoughts and prayers!

Doug was an incredible leader. I loved his humor and care for all employees of Lincoln Benefit Life. He was so personable and genuine. I still have the gift he gave me when I moved away from Nebraska - he was so thoughtful. He will be missed.
