Douglas (Doug) Lee Gin passed away unexpectedly at the age of 58 on July 5th, 2024 in an automobile accident in
Longmont, Colorado while traveling with his wife, Jeanne Loi.
Doug was born on January 6th, 1966, in Ashcroft, British Columbia, Canada. Always a bright student, he received numerous scholarships and awards during his education, aiding him in obtaining his BSc Honours Chemistry from University of British Columbia in 1988 and PhD in Chemistry from Caltech in 1993. Doug then traveled across the country for postdoctoral work at University of Pennsylvania before returning to California as an Assistant Professor at U.C. Berkeley. During his studies, he made many lifelong friends that he would keep in touch with as he moved along his career.
While living in Richmond, CA, Doug met the love of his life, Jeanne they were married on July 12th, 1997, in Napa, California. They welcomed their first child, Nathan, born December 1999. Doug and his family then moved to Colorado in 2001 after accepting a position as Associate Professor in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at University of Colorado Boulder. He was swiftly promoted to full Professor in 2005. During this time, his second child, Amanda, was born in June 2002.
Doug balanced his time between spending it with his family and leading a successful research group, the latter growing to encompass more than 120 members over 30 years. Those that know Doug would remember his fondness for traveling around the globe, his excitement for comic books and toys from his youth and his love for fast cars. Doug had a very caring personality - he went to great lengths to take care of his mother, Gigi, after the passing of his father Eugene in 2009 and his younger brother David in 2011. He was also incredibly proud of his children as they grew up and later pursued their own advanced degrees. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Doug is survived by his wife, Jeanne; two kids, Nathan and Amanda; and mother; Gigi.
