Douglas Alexander Stuart King

Dr. Douglas Alexander Stuart King passed away surrounded by his family, on November 1, 2025. Douglas, the eldest of six children, was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, to the late Dr. Alexander and Margaret King. As an infant, he moved with his family to New Zealand, the country that would shape his adventurous spirit and sense of humor.

He later returned to Scotland to complete his medical degree at the University of Dundee. Always seeking out purposeful and challenging experiences, Douglas volunteered with the Red Cross during the Angolan Civil War. He vowed that if he survived that experience, he would “brush up on his OB/GYN skills”—a promise he kept by earning his Diploma in Obstetrics from the University of Auckland. Later in life, he became a Fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners and achieved certification with the American Board of Family Medicine.

A devoted fan of country music, Douglas followed his heart to Tennessee, beginning his career in American medicine. Eventually, he settled in Alpena, opening the area’s first walk-in medical center, Qwick Care. Douglas initially considered a kiwi bird for the clinic’s logo to honor his homeland of New Zealand, but when he realized few people would recognize a kiwi bird, he instead chose a kangaroo with a crutch – a choice that earned him the affectionate nickname “the Kangaroo Doctor.”

Douglas recently celebrated his 35th wedding anniversary with his beloved wife, Anne Marie (Hoppe) King. He was immensely proud of their twin daughters, Lara and Giselle, and took great joy in seeing them both graduate from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor with bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

He will always be remembered for his lifelong dedication to medicine, his deep love for his family, and his infectious enthusiasm for life.

Douglas was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Alexander “Sandy” King. He is survived by his wife, Anne; his daughters, Lara and Giselle; his siblings Dr. Andrew King, Dr. Richard King, Malcolm King, and Margaret Cartwright; his father-in-law Thomas Hoppe (Betty); mother-in-law Mary Scanlon; sisters-in-law Maureen (John) Brittain, Jayne (Jim) Overbeck, Jessica (Jonathan Kilman) Hoppe; and brothers-in-law Thomas Hoppe and Jeremiah (Connie) Hoppe. He is also fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.

Cremation arrangements have been handled by A. E. Ross Funeral Home, and a private memorial service will be held at a later date.
