Douglas P. Mackey, Sr. age 87 passed away February 7, 2025. Doug was born August 31, 1937, in Garnerville, New York to Florence (Stein) & Francis A. Mackey. He married Elaine (Ironside) on June 4, 1960. They were married for 57 years. Elaine predeceased him in 2018. Doug was the youngest of five brothers who predeceased him.
As Life Member and Past President of the S.W. Johnson Fire Department, he was instrumental in the design and construction of the S.W. Johnson Firehouse on Bridge Street, Garnerville. He restored and donated a utility truck (23 EQ) that served the Fire Department for over 25 years. He also enjoyed his social membership with his friends at Cosgriff Hose Company #4 of Haverstraw.
Doug worked as a bus driver and mechanic. He retired from the Village of West Haverstraw after many years of maintaining their fleet of trucks and equipment. Doug took the lead in many community improvements such as the creation of the Peck's Pond Park and the ball fields and concession stand serving the Haverstraw Little League.
Doug loved to travel. He enjoyed vacationing with family and friends in places such as New England, Canada, Germany, Bermuda and Hawaii.
Doug loved his family and being "Pop" to his grandchildren. He had a great love for his dogs and grand dogs and always had a treat for them in his pocket.
He is survived by his children; Douglas P. Mackey, Jr. and wife Sherri, of Scotia, NY, Ronald Mackey and wife Kathleen of New Windsor, NY and Janice Jensen and husband Christopher of Stony Point, NY. His grandchildren; Alexandra Babcock and husband Justin, Kevin Mackey, Natalie Jensen, and Bryan Jensen, and great grandchildren; Hazel & Hudson Babcock.. Doug is also survived by his sister-in-law & brother -in-law Patricia and Thomas Ludwig of Lakewood Ranch, FL, his good friends and neighbors Liz and Joe Rich and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025 from 12-4 PM and Sunday February 16, 2025 from 1-5 PM. Firematic Services will held at 3 PM on Saturday, February 15, 2025. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, February 17, 2025, at 10 AM at the Trinity Episcopal Church, 28 Chapel Street, Garnerville NY with Rev. Warren R. Brandt officiating. Doug will be laid to rest at Mount Repose Cemetery, Haverstraw, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Joe Raso Hospice Residence, 415 Buena Vista Road, New City, NY 10956.
