Douglas E. Price, 92, of Canadensis passed away in his home on Thursday, June 26, 2025. Born in Canadensis, he was the son of the late William and Velma (Sommers) Price. As a young man, Doug was naturally drawn into the family nursery and landscaping business, and he continued in this trade as owner/operator of Creative Gardens for years to follow. He was a gifted landscaper, performing his magic at many local residences and resorts and even after all these years, the "Doug Price touch " is still evident in the backbones of many properties. Doug was also a wood working craftsman, making furniture, decorative planters, clocks, cutting boards, etc and his signature wooden baskets, all of which are on display in many local homes.
Doug was born a naturally gifted athlete and as a young man he played on several local amateur baseball teams and at one point was scouted as a pitcher for the minors. Still, it wasn't until his late 30s that he discovered the true love of his life; the game of golf. And the game of golf loved him back! He became a scratch player, winning many championships and obtaining his last of 5(I think) holes in one in his early 80s.
As a family man, Doug liked to teach his children from his own experiences. Some things they wanted to hear, some things they did not want to hear. But the one lesson he taught, more through actions than words was to never say "I can't ". His children heard that loud and clear. Doug was also a devoted husband to his 2nd wife Barbara, caring for her not only in their home, but also in the nursing facility where he visited her daily, always bringing a special meal.
In his later years, Doug concentrated his time and effort on his own landscaping and flower/vegetable gardens. He helped grow thousands of flowers used to raise money for animal rescue. His dedication to the cause was acknowledged by Canadensis Vet Clinic in the form of a St. Francis Award. Even after becoming wheelchair bound, he would still be outside digging in the dirt, using longer handled garden tools that he crafted himself so he could reach. And as recent as two weeks before his passing, he could still be found planting potatoes or in his shop working on his wooden planters. There is a palpable difference at the Price residence now. It has become somewhat paler, more dull, more muted. Still our memories of Doug will always shine bright.
"He who works with his hands is a laborer. He who works with his hands and head is a craftsman. He who works with his hands, his head, and his heart, is an artist." - St. Francis of Assisi
