Douglas J. Stegmiller, a steadfast and quietly humorous man, passed away in Gig Harbor, WA, on April 30th, 2025, at the age of 89. Born in Bemidji, MN, on October 15th, 1935, Doug lived a life marked by service, hard work, and a deep-seated desire to build and create.
A proud Marine, Doug served his country during the Korean War, instilling in him a sense of duty and resilience that would characterize his life. Following his military service, he dedicated 35 years to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, where his diligence and dependability were well-known.
Beyond his professional life, Doug held a lifelong aspiration to build his own home, a dream he realized not once, but twice. Upon retiring from the shipyard, he wholeheartedly embraced his passion for woodworking and home construction. Many in Gig Harbor will fondly remember him as a fixture of the local farmers market, where he shared his beautifully handcrafted furniture and wood pieces with the community operating as Wooden Treasures.
Doug was known for his kind nature, his quiet demeanor, and his unwavering work ethic. Those who knew him well also appreciated his subtle and often unexpected sense of humor. He was a dependable presence in the lives of his family and friends, offering quiet support and a wry smile when you least expected it.
He is survived by his loving wife, Louise Stegmiller, who shared 44 years of life and laughter with him. His legacy also lives on through his two children, Kathy Olson and David Stegmiller, step-daughter, Denise McLaughlin, and his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In remembrance of Doug, perhaps we can all appreciate the quiet strength, the value of hard work, and the occasional well-timed bit of humor that he brought to the world. He will be greatly missed.
