PROVIDENCE, RI- Douglas Robert Tingle, 67, passed away on December 3, 2025.
Born April 14, 1958, in
Providence, Rhode Island, Doug was the son of Robert and Susanne Tingle and grew up in East Greenwich. He graduated from Moses Brown School in 1976, where he played middle infield for the varsity baseball team, and went on to earn degrees from Dean College and Rhode Island College.
Baseball was a lifelong passion for Doug, beginning with backyard games of catch with his father, followed by East Greenwich Little League, varsity high school baseball, and continuing through decades of devoted Red Sox fandom. He attended games at Fenway Park starting in the early 1960's, experiencing many highlights and heartbreaks alongside all the Fenway Faithful, including front-row seats for Game 5 of the 1975 World Series. He also attended his nephew's little league and AAU games whenever possible.
Doug spent many years working in the media and communications division of Cox Automotive. He also worked in the Office of Constituent Affairs for Governor Lincoln Chafee and spent the last decade serving as Operations Manager for the Westerly Education Center.
He was deeply engaged in politics, working on multiple campaigns for US Senator John Chafee, US Representative Claudine Schneider, and Governor Lincoln Chafee.
Doug was known for his warmth, calm enthusiasm and support of many friends sharing a mutual love of the outdoors and music. Providence's music scene, where his love of guitar playing and all genres of music, connected him with a wide community. He was a lifelong avid outdoorsman, spending
childhood summers at Bonnet Shores and later hiking, camping, and kayaking throughout New England - Acadia National Park held a special place in his heart, and he treasured ski trips to Sugarbush from his youth through adulthood. He was active with the local Take a Hike group, regularly leading trips throughout Rhode Island. He could often be found at the end of the group, making sure no one got lost or tripped and fell. He always ensured everybody had a good time - exploring, laughing and getting away from it all in nature.
Doug is survived by his brother Jeffrey and his wife Cynthia, his brothers Stephen and his partner Jean, and Robert, Jr. and his partner Jay, and his nieces and nephews: Jefferson and his wife Madeleine; Emily and her husband Stefan; Astrid, and Spencer.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held on Saturday, January 24th from 12:30 to 3:00 p.m. at Nick-a-Nees, 75 South Street, Providence. Interment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, donations in Doug's memory may be made to the Newport Festival Foundation's Music Education Fund which provides free instruments, music lessons, and after-school programs to thousands of students each year.
