Douglas Winans Obituary

Published by Gebhart Funeral Home - Claymont on Dec. 27, 2013.
Douglas W. Winans, age 61, of Claymont DE (formerly of Levittown, Pa) left us suddenly to walk his dog Max who predeceased him in March of this year. He was born in August of 1952 in Baldwin, LI, NY to Edith Carlson Winans and the late William Arthur Winans. Doug worked the last 11 years for Progressive Insurance as a Field Investigator and was looking forward to retirement. He had lots of ideas for places to go, things to do and people to see. Doug was dedicated to his wife Donna and family, and was respected and liked by all who knew him. He enjoyed reading, watching and supporting Pitbulls and Parolees and puttering around the yard. His greatest pleasures were: traveling with Donna, cruises were his favorite, going out on a head boat fishing with his son's Doug Jr. and Mike Winans, teaching the older grandchildren, Alexis Myers and David Baker surf fishing, going to the park with younger granddaughters, Sarah and Becca Winans to watch them master the rock wall and the special Phillies games with his brother Greg Winans. He especially enjoyed just relaxing on the deck, watching the birds, butterflies and hummingbirds flock to the garden he and Donna created. He will be sorely missed not only by his wife, Donna; son's, Doug Jr. (Erika) and Mike (Amy); his brother Gregory (Jennifer); sister, Nancy Hendrickson (Bruce) who were his best friends, mother, Edith, but also his grandchildren who were the twinkle in his eye's and thought he was the greatest 'PoPo' ever. Doug is also survived by step daughter, Kim Baker (Ken); Uncle, Arvid and Aunt, Susan Carlson and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. A Memorial Service will be celebrated on Thursday, January 2nd at 11:00am at Gebhart Funeral Home, 3401 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703, where family and friends may visit from 10-11am. Doug will be buried privately at a later date. The family suggests a donation be made to your favorite charity in lieu of flowers. My condolences to the entire Winans family. I was Doug's supervisor at Progressive a while ago, and felt blessed to have been able to have Doug touch my life. He was a kind and gentle man, and was passionate about his family. God bless.

Donna, you already know how much we will miss our backyard buddie. We couldn't ask for nicer neighbors. We still miss Max and losing Doug is still too much to really comprehend. We can only imagine your pain. Please know we are here for you and only steps away.

I am very sorry for your loss. Doug and I worked together and we exchanged stories of our shared love for our dogs. I am sure Max was the first to greet Doug in heaven. Doug was a good man.
