Doyle Roy Singleton 1931 ~ 2023
Doyle Roy Singleton, 92, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2023, at Truewood Senior Living Community in Taylorsville, UT.
Doyle was born on January 25, 1931, in St. Anthony, Idaho. He was the youngest of eight children born to George and Maude Singleton. Doyle and his siblings grew up on the family ranch in St Anthony. He earned the nickname "Step and a Half" as a young child when trying to walk in his dad's old boots. Later, he went by the nickname "Dutch" which he says was because he was always in "Dutch" (trouble). As a lefty, school was hard for Doyle. In the first grade his teacher tied his left hand behind his back to try to make him right-handed. Doyle was good in sports, and he said he was the fastest runner in the school. In high school he lettered in football, basketball, and track. He also set a school record, 10 seconds for the 100-yard dash.
Doyle joined the US Navy in the late 1940's and served on the U.S.S. Talladega APA 208 during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged at the end of his tour.
On July 19, 1958, he married Thora Jean Taylor in Malad, Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple on March 18, 1971. Doyle and his wife Thora completed a mission for the LDS church in Cove Fort, Utah in 1998. Doyle met his beautiful green-eyed, red-headed bride, Thora while she was working in a cafe in Provo, UT. They enjoyed 47 years together until she passed away on September 13, 2005.
Doyle worked for the Forest Service as a spotter to detect trees infested with bugs. He also worked for Garrett Freight Line and went to Idaho State College. Doyle's skills as an iron worker allowed him and his family the opportunity to travel to many places including Page, AZ where he worked on the Glen Canyon Dam in the late 1950's. Page was a newly established town at that time, and this is where his daughter Theresa was born. He always teased her by saying she was "born under a rock."
In 2008 he married Gloria Welker who he loved and cared for until her passing on May 2, 2023.
Doyle loved traveling, fishing, riding motorcycles, square dancing, old westerns, watching "Yellowstone," talking politics, and coffee-time at the Hi-Way Cafe with his nephew Larry Singleton. He was fond of carrot cake, carrot pudding, and anything and everything made with carrots.
Doyle is survived by his children, Theresa (Bart) Pedersen, Jeff (Maria) Anderson, Valerie (Ed) Vickers; 9 grandchildren;17 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
Doyle was preceded in death by his stepdaughter Patricia Bliss, grandsons Charles Vickers and Cyrus Mecham, and granddaughter Haley Bliss.
Doyle loved his family more than anything else, and he will be greatly missed by them all.
Special thanks to all the caretakers at Truewood by Merrill and Enhabit Hospice for their kind and thoughtful care.
