Mr. Doyle Thornton, Jr., age 81 of Bowman, Ga., passed away peacefully on Monday, Sept. 2, 2024 at Piedmont Athens Regional.
He was born on December 22, 1942 to the late Doyle Thornton, Sr., and Mattie Lee Thompson Thornton. He was educated in the Elbert County School System. He was a devout member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Bowman, GA. Doyle served many years as a deacon and usher at the church. Doyle worked proudly for 42 years at the Elberton Police Dept., and Elbert County Sheriff Dept. He was one of the first African American officers in Elbert County. He retired several years ago from Elbert County.
Doyle was preceded in death by his brothers; Claude (Renna) Thornton, Otha Thornton and Joseph Thornton, also two sisters, Rosa (Sam) Stone and Scharlean (Eugene) Bolden.
He leaves to cherish fond memories; his wife of 60 years, Margaret Goss Thornton, his brother, Charles L. Thornton (Sheryl A. Thornton), sisters in law, Sylvia Little, Estelle Thornton and Emma Thornton, along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
A funeral service celebrating the life of Doyle Thornton, Jr., will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at One o'clock from Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Bowman. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. Family members will be at the home, 139 Roosevelt Circle in Bowman.
Elberton Police and Elbert County Sheriff's Department will serve as honorary escort.
