Brit Smith Obituary

Dr. Brit O. Smith, MD July 31, 1930 - June 29, 2023 Dr. Brit O. Smith, MD was born in Tucson, Arizona on July 31st, 1930, and passed away surrounded by family on June 29th, 2023 in Lancaster, California one month shy of his 93rd birthday. Beloved Husband, Brother, Father, Grandfather and Friend; Brit was a funny, sweet, kind-hearted man who touched many people throughout his life. Growing up (Tucson, Az) Brit would play "any sport ever invented, 365 days a year," as he would proudly tell others. You name it; basketball, baseball, football, swimming, soc-cer, golf... he loved them all along with the friendships and competition that came with them. In highschool he grew to be a jack of all trades; he was Senior Class President and he excelled in athletics being named to the All-State basketball and swim team, and winning the Arizona State Basketball Championship with an undefeated record his senior year (1948). Doc proudly went on to attend University of the Pacific from 1948-1951 where he served as Class President and member of the Varsity Basketball and Swimming team. He loved every minute of the academic journey and the joy of playing sports. After completing his undergraduate degree, he set his sights on medical school and proudly attended The University of Southern California Medical School, graduating with honors in 1955. USC is also where he met his wife of 55 years, Mary Lou. He was the proudest Trojan you've ever met, and was always their #1 fan . A USC Football season ticket holder for over 60+ years; he loved making memories at games with family and friends. Fight On! Following medical school, he entered the Air Force School of Aviation Medicine and graduated as an Air Force Flight Surgeon. He looked west and settled his family in Lancaster, CA in 1958, where he and Mary Lou raised four children that they loved dearly. Doc opened his own practice in 1958, and was a beloved Doctor to the AV for over 62 successful years, 34 years of which were with his daughter Heather Smith as his Physician's Assistant. He reluctantly retired at 90 years old but his lifelong love for medicine never ended. He was a pillar in the community, offering his time and service to the YMCA, Rotary, Boy Scouts, City of Lancaster, and dedicated Team Doc for local highschools and AVC... just to name a few. The proudest role held was his role to any youth looking for guidance. He was the best motivator and supporter to anyone in need. He led with love, always seeing the best in everyone. He would go on to mentor and shepherd countless people over the years with his endless wisdom and love for others. Dr. Smith was a loyal member of the Antelope Valley Country Club for over 60+ years where he shared his love of golf (and golf ball hunting) with members of the community, family, and friends. He loved to spend time with other members of the club whom he saw as family, and was always the first to welcome a new member with a smile and an invitation to go out to dinner. He truly never met a stranger, and knew how to make everyone feel at home. He was lucky enough to find a loving companion in Aileen Boyle. They spent many fun and loving years traveling, and experiencing life's adventures with each other. Truly a match, complimenting each other in every way. He will be remembered for his immense love for his family, his friends, his never ending quest for knowledge and adventure, and his passion for life. He will forever be missed by all that knew him. He is preceded in death by his wife Mary Lou Smith, sons Scott C. Smith and Kirk C. Smith, and Grandchildren Brit O. Smith and Emillie R. McCullough. He is survived by daughters Wendy Smith-McCullough, MS and Heather Smith, son-in-law Tim McCullough, son-in-law Bob Porter, daughter-in-law Becky Smith, daughter-in-law Cyndie Schaefer, Grandchildren Heidi Smith, Makenzie Smith, Stevie Smith (Joe Mahon), Chelsea Hilliard, Jacob Smith, Jordan Porter, Cassidy Porter, Karlee Porter, and Great Grandson Parker Mahon. A Celebration of Life will be held 11:00am, Friday, July 28th at Grace Chapel in Lancaster. Following the service, family and friends will be gathering at The Antelope Valley Country Club

Godspeed Dr. Smith. Stan and I are grateful that in your and our lifetimes, we could call you Brit. Thank you for your sincere friendship to everyone God placed in your large circle of life. YMCA is probably where our paths crossed at first and the AV Country Club is where we last saw your welcoming smile. Sadly Stan and I were out of state during your Memorial Service but trust the sincere love of God and everyone present overflowed and comforted all. Truly the legacy of Mary Lou and Dr. Brit Smith will continue to bless, encourage and inspire all in the Antelope Valley and beyond.
Love and prayers,
Chris Ulvin

Brit Smith was my friend and doctor ever since he opened his office in Lancaster. He delivered all my sons and was a true family friend. He made sure my boys had swimming lessons through the local YMCA. He even offered his own swimming pool to help kids learn to swim.

You would feel better just by talking to him. He was good medicine! I loved his enthusiasm for life. He once told me that his favorite part of being a doctor was delivering babies. He loved his profession and truly enjoyed helping people.

God Bless his family members and all who loved him. He will always be one of my favorite memories and I will miss him greatly. God Bless Dr. Brit Smith!

Dr. Smith was our family friend and physician for most of my life. He played basketball with my Father Hank Marvin. Both attended USC and had seats near ours at the football games for many years. Brit always took time to talk with me, at his office or out on the town. He truly like to help younger people. We are honored to have known him.

We are very saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Smith. He was an icon of the Antelope Valley. He was our family physician many years.
We would be attending services, unfortunately we will be out of State on that date.
Sending our sincere condolences to Heather and the family.
