James Sweet Obituary

Dr. James Edmund Sweet
Born: January 15, 1940
Died: January 9, 2024 in Marengo, IL
James Edmund Sweet, also known as Jim, passed away on January 9, 2024, at the Northwestern Medical Center in Huntley, Illinois, at the age of 83. He was born on January 15, 1940, in Maryland. Jim was a man of diverse talents and interests. He was a dreamer, painter, sculptor, philosopher, intellectual, student, scholar, horseman, hunter, pilot, sailor, skier, and comedian. He had a passion for the Constitution and was also a doctor.
Jim was a dedicated husband to his wife, Carol L. (Hall) Sweet, for 56 years. He was a loving father to his children, Elizabeth J. Sweet (Carlos Velasquez), James E. Sweet III, Amelia C. Sweet, and David M. Wolf. Nicholas J. Peters and Matthew J. Peters, grandsons, were his treasures. Jim's presence brought excitement and joy to the lives of those around him. Life with him was never dull, earning him the nickname "SweetPea."
Jim pursued higher education at the University of South Dakota and Northwestern Dental School. He was a proud alumnus of both institutions.
A ceremony to celebrate Jim's life will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at the First Presbyterian Church of Marengo. Following the service, there will be a gathering of family, friends, and loved ones to share memories and support one another, at Joe's Place, 19716 E Grant Hwy, Marengo, IL at 2 pm.
In honor of Jim's passion for the Beta Theta Pi fraternity at the University of South Dakota, contributions can be made to the "USD-Beta Wooglin Scholarship-James Sweet" fund. This scholarship has been established to help young men thrive for another 100 years, in memory of Jim and his family's dedication to Beta Theta Pi. Jim's grandfather, Oliver Sweet, founded the fraternity chapter in 1912, and his father, James Sweet, joined in 1929. Jim continued the family legacy by joining 30 years later.
Please consider supporting this cause in lieu of sending flowers. Your contribution will ensure that Jim's love for Beta Theta Pi and his commitment to education live on.

Condolences to the the Sweet Family, Jim was a very good friend to me and we had great times flying his airplane together for several years. I am very thankful for his friendship and moral support during a very trying time in my life. Your family is in my thoughts at this time.
