PEPPERELL, Mass. - Dr. John E. Lindermuth, 80, of Pepperell, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2024. He spent his last moments exactly as he had hoped: enjoying the beautiful Pepperell farm where he achieved his dreams of raising a family, building a successful veterinary practice and serving his community. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Kenney); his mother, Mary; and his father, Elmer Jr.
John embodied the self-made man. He was an only child, born and raised in the poor coal mining Village of Ranshaw, near Shamokin, June 26, 1943, and tragically lost his father to a mining accident when he was 16 years old.
"Jackie," as he was known as a boy, boasted that he would win spending money by accepting dares to jump over a small stream affectionally known in his neighborhood as "the sh--t creek." He was just as proud to be an altar boy at the Transfiguration of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church as he was to be a celebrated athlete at Coal Township High School, captaining the Purple Demons football and basketball teams.
Upon graduating, John served his country by enlisting in the U.S. Air Force, and, after completing his duty, took advantage of the G.I. Bill to earn his doctorate degree in veterinary medicine from Texas A&M University.
John met Mary in the summer of 1967. They married at St John's Catholic Church, in Robstown, Texas, and soon thereafter John became "Dad." A beloved father, John is survived by his six children, Kirsten (David) Pacaro, of Townsend, Massachusetts, Johanna (Robert) Gervais, of Townsend, Cassie (Travis) Adams, of Pepperell, Massachusetts, John (Danielle) Lindermuth, of Washington D.C., Joelle (Anthony) Doyle, of Palos Heights, Illinois, and McAul (Erich) Parent, of Clarendon, Vermont. Likewise, "Dockie" and his legendary antics will live on in the memories of his 15 grandchildren, Madison, Makenna, Ciera, Macklyn, Samantha, Lindy, William, John Henry, Darragh, Annaleigh (aka, "Dockie's Sidekick"), Nathan, Abigail, Callaghan, Wesley and Fitzpatrick.
Dr. Lindermuth shared his uncommon gifts with his community. He practiced veterinary medicine in Texas, South Dakota and New Hampshire, but his legacy will always be in Pepperell. He built Preventative Veterinary Medical Clinic next door to his family home, where he has tirelessly served his clients for more than 40 years. He epitomized the "country doctor," never turning away a furry friend in need, regardless of the time of day or the owner's ability to pay. His work-life philosophy was simple: "Design your life to not need a vacation from it."
Clients appreciated Dr. Lindermuth's intelligence and skill, but they loved Dr. John's compassion, generosity, devotion, humor and willingness to give an impromptu tour of his property and the countless pets that called the Lindermuth farm home. He was also an enthusiastic volunteer, somehow finding the time to coach, host drop-in clinics for local pet owners, support the Pepperell-Groton Rotary Club, bring meals to senior citizens and serve as the chief trash officer for the Columbus Day Soccer Tournament in Pepperell.
And he loved children. So many of the Lindermuth kids' friends have fond memories of piling into John's silver and maroon van and being seatbeltlessly whisked away to Canobie Lake Park, the White Mountains or some other road trip destination.
When Dad was not in the clinic or tending to his property, he was on the golf course. Gifted with surgeon's hands, he was a skilled putter and, like all aspects of his life, he never stopped working on his game and experimenting with new ideas. He undoubtedly holds the record for most holes played at Townsend Ridge without bothering to check in with the starter.
Whether known as Dad, Dockie, Dr. Lindermuth or just John, he will be lovingly remembered by his clients, his community, his dear friend Julie Wonkka, and - above all - his family.

Dr. John had been our trusted and companionate Vet for more than 20 years. He took care of our two family dogs in that time. Last July he helped me put down our devoted dog, Yogi. His compassion, devotion and great skill will live beyond his years. From our conversations, I know he missed his wife dearly. I think it was his love of family and his devotion to his profession and his many clients and 'patients' that sustained him. We live in Hollis and we had lost touch as we still have not gotten another dog and I just happen to learn of his passing this morning. We are most saddened and send our deepest sympathy to Dr. John's family. We all have lost a most trusted friend and his life will remain an example to all. Rest is Peace Dr. John.
