Dr. John passed away Thursday, October 30, 2025, at home surrounded by his family.

John was born in Dickinson on December 20, 1951, the son of Paul and Harriet (Rother) Weir. He grew up attending school in Dickinson, graduating from Dickinson High School in 1970. He received his first undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of North Dakota and later achieved his second undergraduate degree in accounting from Moorhead State University. After that, John worked for various companies, such as Nerco and Essco, for several years before he decided to attend optometry school at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon. Upon graduating from optometry school in 1987, he then returned to Dickinson to practice with his brother. It was during this time that he met Deborah Wald. They were married on May 29, 1992 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Dickinson. They were blessed with two children, Nicholas and Gretchen. John was always grateful for his optometry practice and cherished the time he spent with his patients. In 2019, he retired from his practice on his birthday. John was active in the community as a proud member of The Elks, St. Patrick's School Board, Knights of Columbus, and Dickinson Optimist Club. He was a life-long learner, having a thirst for knowledge on anything that piqued his interest. He was an avid E-Bay lover and enjoyed collecting both antiques and clocks. Two of John's life long passions were motorcycles and hunting, in which he loved riding his Harley and hunting with Nick and family friends. John also loved driving his 1936 Ford Cabriolet, camping, spending time with his family and friends, attending Vikings' games, and visiting the Black Hills.

John is survived by his wife, Deb, of 33 years; daughter, Gretchen Weir of Louisville, KY; son, Nicholas (Cori) Weir of Dickinson; granddaughter, Karsen Weir; sisters, Kay Bentley of Portland, OR, Joan Allen of Minneapolis, MN, Marjorie Hoff of Buffalo, NY; and sisters-in-law Julianne Weir, McLean, VA, Renee (Glen) Hochhalter, Dickinson, ND. He was also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Harriet Weir; brother, Robert Weir; father and mother-in-law, Wally and Betty Wald; and brother-in-law, Peter Bentley.

In lieu of flowers, John's family suggests memorials be made to: Trinity Catholic Schools and Queen of Peace Catholic Church.
