Mark William Mulkey, 66 of Mason City, IA passed away on Monday, January 5, 2026. He was born November 22, 1959 in Fort Collins, CO to Bruce Mulkey and Phyllis (Deal) Mulkey. His father’s Airforce career had the family moving to various states which included Hawaii, Virginia, Colorado, Pennsylvania and finally settling in Nebraska where he graduated from Bellevue West High School in 1978. Mark attended Doane University playing football and double majoring in biology and chemistry, where he met the love of his life, Judy (Steinkuhler) Mulkey. Mark graduated from Doane in May and married Judy in August of 1982.

Mark supported himself through school doing a variety of odd jobs including janitor, working at cement and rendering factories, and golf course security guard. He attended Medical School at the University of Nebraska Medical Center graduating in 1986, the same year as the birth of their daughter Jessica. The family moved to Iowa City for his General Surgery Residency at the University of Iowa where twins Brett and Ryan were born in 1989. After completing a rotation and a year of general surgery at the Mason City Clinic, Mark was asked to start the first Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department in Mason City, IA. He then went on to complete his plastic surgery fellowship at the University of Wisconsin Madison and then returned to Mason City in 1995.

Mark embraced his practice and the community. He poured himself into it by serving as the OR Director, President of the Mason City Clinic and other boards. He had a passion for innovation in his field and changing people’s lives through the newest techniques of reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. Mark retired in September 2025 after 30 years of practice. Mark’s passion did not stop with the medical community. He also served on the Doane University Board of Trustees.

Mark was a modern-day Renaissance man. If there was a skill to learn, he committed himself to mastering it. His interests were as varied as his talents, which included: music production, playing the drums, fireworks, landscaping, tree trimming, sketching, fishing, hunting, snowboarding, wakesurfing, sailing, jet skiing, robotics, virtual reality and solar energy. But his greatest passions of all were his faith and his family.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Mulkey; his stepmother Judith Chiri Mulkey; his daughter Jessica Mulkey (Logan Nielsen); his son Brett Mulkey (Alexis); his son Ryan Mulkey; grandchildren Charlie and Wesley Mulkey (children of Brett and Alexis); his brother Kent Mulkey (Christine Yoder); his brother Darren Mulkey (Kathie); and his nieces and nephews. Mark was preceded in death by his parents Bruce Mulkey and Phyllis (Deal) Mulkey and his beloved dogs Eric, Crystal, and Hans.
