Dr. Thomas Huber Obituary

Dr. Thomas Wayne Huber of Temple passed away peacefully on February 22, 2026.

Born at home on September 2, 1942, in Eddy, Texas, he grew up on the family farm in Belfalls and attended school in Troy, where he graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1960. From there he moved on to the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned his doctorate in microbiology in 1968.

It was during his first year of college in Austin that he met Doris Weise, calling her up for a coffee date after seeing her picture in the yearbook of a mutual friend. Uncharacteristically, she accepted his invitation sight unseen. On September 7, 1963, the two were married and then worked tirelessly over the next 62 years to build and care for their family of 3 children and 5 grandchildren.

Dr. Huber's early career was marked by stints at CDC headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, UT Health Science Center in San Antonio, and the city health department in Houston. In 1981 he had the opportunity to move back home to Central Texas, where he spent the next 35 years at the Olin E. Teague Veteran's Hospital, retiring in 2016. While some may remember him for his research into the development of antibiotic resistance in bacteria, or for his role as president of the Texas branch of the American Society for Microbiology, or for the countless articles he published in medical journals around the world, it was as a teacher and mentor that the greater share of people he encountered will most fondly remember him. Whether it was in his role on the faculty of Texas A&M Medical School, teaching night classes at Temple College, sharing God's Word with the youth in Sunday School at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Temple, or the years and years of coaching youth softball and baseball for his children and grandchildren and their friends, it was always clear that, at heart, Dr. Huber was first and foremost a teacher.

He approached life with humor. He was ready with a joke or a witty comeback in nearly every situation, as those fortunate enough to have shared a laboratory, a classroom, or a ball field with him will attest. In addition to all of his other endeavors, he had a life-long love of gardening, fishing, hiking, and just puttering around at the farm. It is perhaps a testimony to his humility that, in spite of his impressive professional career, he was just as likely to identify such things as his brick on the Temple Youth Softball Walk of Fame or his successful ascent of Long's Peak in Colorado at the age of 55 with his son and son-in-law as his proudest accomplishments.

He is survived by his beloved wife Doris (Weise) Huber and children Mollie Huber, Samuel Huber (wife Marketa Huber), and Laura (Huber) Williams. He is also survived by his brother, Ralph Huber, along with five cherished grandchildren: Emily Williams, Grant Williams, Anna Huber, Caroline Huber, and Samuel Huber.

Dr. Huber is now joyfully reunited in glory with his parents, Albert Huber and Flora (Hinze) Huber, his sister Joyce (Huber) Foulds, and his son-in-law Keith Williams.

A special thank you to Canyon Creek Memory Care and Amedisys Hospice for their compassionate care.
