Obituary published on Legacy.com by Haven of Rest Funeral Home, Cemetery, Crematory - Gig Harbor on Nov. 7, 2025.
We pay tribute to the life of Drago Kalafatich, a man whose resilience and ambition came to define him. Born on September 22nd, 1939, in Bribir, Croatia, Drago grew up to craft a life that mirrored his courageous spirit. On the morning of November 1, 2025, at the age of 86, Drago passed on from his time here on earth leaving behind a rich legacy rooted in family and perseverance. As a young man, Drago attempted to escape Yugoslavia several times, finally succeeding in 1957 when he crossed the border into Austria. Soon later he arrived in New York and made his way to Los Angeles where his grandfather lived. After meeting his wife Bernadette and starting a family, Drago moved to Lake Arrowhead, California before finally arriving at his final residence in
Gig Harbor, Washington in the late 1970's.
Drago's exceptional career as a wood craftsman and home builder was not just a means of providing for his family, but a testament to his character. He constructed more than homes; he built trusted relationships, displayed his demand for integrity, took honor and pride in his workmanship, and became a mentor to so many. Those who had the privilege of knowing Drago were always learning from his experiences and vast knowledge. Drago had the best laughter, and his quick wit and big smile will never be forgotten. He had many hobbies that were all indicative of a man who lived life to the fullest, from gardening, cooking, hiking, hunting, and coaching. Perhaps Drago's greatest passion, though, was soccer. From playing professionally in his early days in Croatia and Austria, to playing competitively as a young adult in California, to being a founding member of that club that we now know as Harbor Soccer Club, Drago was always involved and watching soccer. He coached and trained generations of families in our local community and continued to play himself through his late 70's.
Despite his deep passion for soccer, Drago's love for his family was the cornerstone of his existence. He was a resilient pillar of support and strength to his daughter Maria Kalafatich and his son and daughter-in-law, Nicholas and Amy Kalafatich. His grandchildren Caleb, Mila, Zoe, and Natalia will forever remember their grandpa as their number one supporter, encouraging their success and investing in their interests and lives. Drago also leaves behind his two brother-in-laws, Gerard Baxendale and Ralph Baxendale and their families. Drago was preceded in death and joins his beloved spouse, Bernadette Kalafatich and his parents, Nikola Kalafatich and Maria Kalafatich, with Jesus in heaven. As we mourn his passing, we draw comfort from the Catholic verse, "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." (Matthew 5:4) and know we will reunite with Drago in heaven one day.
We invite you to celebrate Drago's rich life by sharing your memories and photos on his memorial page. Reflect on the times Drago inspired you, the moments his ambition drove you, and the instances his courage gave you strength. Let us remember Drago not for his passing, but for the vibrant life he lived, the lives he touched, and the love he so generously gave.
