Duane Freitag Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors- Milford on Feb. 26, 2026.
Duane William Freitag, 79, of Milford, Michigan, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2026, surrounded by his loving family at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

Duane was born and raised in L'Anse, where his deep love for the outdoors first took root. As a young man, he found joy in fishing, camping, and spending time on Isle Royale. He later moved downstate to begin his career at the Wixom Ford Assembly Plant, where he worked for nearly 30 years. Milford became his home, and it was there that he built a life grounded in faith, family, and community.

In retirement, Duane fully embraced his passion for antiques. Through his booths and his estate sale business, Step Back Antiques, he delighted in uncovering hidden treasures and sharing stories of the past. His love of local history led him to volunteer for many years with the Milford Historical Society, where he supported education and community fundraising with pride.

To his grandchildren, he was affectionately known as "Grumpster," a nickname worn with humor and love. He treasured time with his family - whether antiquing at flea markets, running garage and estate sales, tending his garden, or sharing his favorite local fishing spots. Tuesday traditions of Costco trips and dinners at Olive Garden became cherished routines. He rarely missed a school theatre production, hockey game, or cross-country meet, and he even took pride in helping his grandchildren master the art of parallel parking. His steady presence, quiet guidance, and love of storytelling made lasting memories for all who knew him.

Duane's love for his family and his entrepreneurial spirit was evident in every part of his life. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those fortunate enough to have known him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Bernadette Freitag.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Judy Freitag; his brothers, Terry Freitag and Dale (Jeannie) Freitag; his step-son, Jeff (Alicia) Susalla; his daughters, Rhea Freitag (Kevin Turner) and Sarah Freitag (Jason Mittlestat); his grandchildren, Sarah Acord, Kyle (Joylynn) Susalla, Jordan (Dani) Acord, Courtney Susalla, Matthew Susalla, and Arlo Mittlestat; and his great-grandchildren, Kylie Clement, Leia Smith, Elijah Smith, and Riley Susalla.

Visitation and memorial service will be held at Thrive Church, located at 680 W Livingston Rd, Highland, MI 48357, on Thursday, March 5, 2026. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., with the memorial service following at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will follow, and Duane will be laid to rest at Oak Grove Cemetery.

Yesterday

To Duane´s family,
May memories help you through your loss. As I read the beautifully written obituary I´m reminded of life as a child & trips with Duane. We always stopped at the Cut River Bridge to stretch our legs. There was the time Aunt Bernie and me were at Duane´s apartment, he was at work & there was a tornado warning. Such excitement- Duane such a wonderful man that was a light on my childhood.
With thoughts & prayers,
Betty Delene
