I don’t know Duane but I heard talk of him on SBN. Beth Ann and her new husband Dave were honoring Duane. I had to look him up. I stumbled upon this obituary as well as some other articles. Duane was a wonderful honorable man. God Bless you for your service and laying down your life for country. My sincerest Condolences to his family and friends. I know for most people his death has been so long ago. For those that knew him and loved him dearly it must feel like yesterday. May God continue to hold you all up until you meet again. ❤

I still talk about you finding and buying your first car at age 16 . You paid $150 for the 1966 Ford Mustang. I thought it had a cracked block but it was only a bad frost plug which we replaced for a couple of dollars. You were so proud of that car and it ran so well for you. You were such a fast learner in everything you did and I mean everything. Your Mom and I miss you every day.

...Major, Retiring Your A-10...
The planes, which entered service in 1976 and have deployed to the Middle East, Europe and the Pacific, have played an outsized role in the air campaign that began in 2014 against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, helping provide close-air support for Iraqi and U.S. partner forces on the ground. The A-10 has also been instrumental in air operations in Afghanistan

I was fortunate to fly with Duane at Beale AFB in the U-2 and the T-38, and deploy with him to France in 1998. He took a picture of my then girl friend (our units flight surgeon at the time) and now wife on one of our fun excursions during that time. The picture sits on my bed side table and will never be taken down. I think of him each time I look at it. He also gave me a Schaefer Beer serving tray that apparently his father purchased on eBay and gave to him. It is the same spelling as my last name and is displayed in my bar at home. Another reminder of him that will hold a permanent place within my house. A thoughtful gesture of his. He was deeply respected by his squadron mates. He was such a great pilot and person. I was so fortunate to know and serve with him. Truly his service is not forgotten by those who were lucky to know him and who had the opportunity to serve with him. God bless him and his sacrifice for our great nation.

Happy Birthday Marine! I miss you on this day because you were one of the most motivational Marines I met. I finally got to see a U2 fly at the Miramar Airshow. "Duane Dively was a great man, a son, a husband, an uncle and a brother. Unfortunately it was not until he gave his life for our country that I came to realize the full effect he had on so many different lives both proffessionally and personally. Describing Duane as "humble" would be an understatement. My heart goes out to the many families who have also lost a loved one to this war on terror and I thank you all for recognizing the sacrafice that Duane has made for our country. Duane truly loved flying and believed in his mission to protect our country and the freedoms we all love. Many described my brother as "a true warrior" and our family will remember him as such forever."

A Nation's Strength

What makes a nation's pillars high
And it's foundations strong?
What makes it might to defy
The foes that round it throng?

It is not gold. It's Kingdoms grand
Go down in battle shock;
It's shafts are laid on sinking sand,
Not on abiding rock.

Is it the sword? Ask the red dust
Of empires passed away;
The blood has turned their stones to rust.
Their glory to decay.

And is it pride? Ah, that bright crown
Has seemed to nations sweet.
But God has struck its luster down
In ashes at his feet.

Not gold but only men take make
A people great and strong;
Men who for truth and honor's sake
Stand fast and suffer long.

Brave men who work while others sleep,
Who dare while others fly...
They build a nation's pillars deep
And lift them to the sky.

Major W. Dively Dively...To never be forgotten

Last Known Activity

Major Duane W. Dively grew up in the Canton, New York area where he was an altar boy and played high school sports. He enlisted in the Marine Corps after school in 1982 and served 4 years.

He worked on achieving a degree in business administration. He was accepted into the USAF Pilot Training program in 1988. He flew AC-130 gunships on various missions in several areas including Somali and Bosnia.

In 1995, he became a U-2 pilot and flew this type aircraft for 10 years. He was assigned to the 1st Reconnasaince Squadron located at Beale AFB, CA. He flew out of Beale accruing over 1000 hours of flight time in the U-2.

He was deployed with the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing to Southwest Asia. While returning from a flight over Afghanistan, his aircraft crashed (returning to Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates). Apparently, the aircraft was flying at about 2,000 feet and 17 miles from its destination when radar contact was lost at 12:30 a.m.

He had previously refused to retire because of his love of flying, and of serving his country.
