Durwood Hawkins, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on September 30, 2025, at UMMC in Jackson, Mississippi. Born on April 30, 1939, in Smith County, Mississippi, Durwood lived a life dedicated to hard work, family, and his passions.
Durwood enjoyed a long and fulfilling career, working at International Paper Company for over 20 years before transitioning to the construction industry. His dedication and strong work ethic were apparent throughout his lifetime, demonstrating a commitment to excellence in everything he undertook. As a graduate of Burns High School, he went on to pursue a degree in forestry at Jones County Junior College, reflecting his deep appreciation for nature and the outdoors.
A man of many talents, Durwood had a profound love for animals and farming. His connection to the land and his respect for the creatures that inhabit it were evident to all who knew him. He embraced life with an enthusiasm that inspired those around him.
Durwood is survived by his devoted wife, Denise Hawkins, of Forest, Mississippi, and his children, including Terry Hawkins (Kendra) of Canton, Mississippi, and his stepchildren: Tracy Latham of Pearl, Mississippi; Allison Harrell (Chris) of Forest, Mississippi; and Andrew Latham (Rebecca) of Brandon, Mississippi. He was also a cherished brother to Jeanette Wade of Forest, Mississippi, and Gary Hawkins of Raleigh, Mississippi. Durwood took great joy in being a grandfather to Audra Meagher (Sean) and his stepgrandchildren, Mason and Hayes Harrell, Caroline, Stella, and Eli Latham. He was a proud great-grandfather to Evie, Rory, and Ellie Meagher.
Durwood's legacy is one of unwavering love for his family and community. He joins his parents, Ewell and Rubye Hawkins, in eternal rest, leaving behind cherished memories and a profound impact on the lives of those he touched.
Visitation will be held on October 3, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 12:45 PM followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM at Wolf Funeral Services - Morton, located at 3054 Hwy 80 West, Morton, Mississippi, 39117.
