Dwayne "Bucky" Curtis Arturo Ohelo
June 20, 1959 – May 25, 2025
Dwayne "Bucky" Curtis Arturo Ohelo was born on June 20, 1959, in Honolulu, Hawai i, the son of Jean Malulani Kaimuloa Ohelo and Arthur Ohelo. He was one of seven siblings raised in the heart of Palolo Valley and later in Kaimuki, where his childhood was steeped in strong family bonds, local pride, and lifelong friendships. These tight-knit communities shaped the foundation of the man he would become.
From an early age, Bucky lived life with energy, purpose, and grit. He was a natural athlete, excelling in football, basketball and baseball. His love for the game took root on the courts and fields of his youth and continued throughout his life. As a proud Kaimuki High School alumnus, he was a teammate, a friend, and a true Bulldog known for both his talent and his loyalty.
Following graduation, Bucky answered the call to serve. As a United States Army soldier, he was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, and in Korea, serving as a 92F Petroleum Supply Specialist. His years in uniform instilled in him a deep sense of discipline, responsibility, and resourcefulness, while also introducing him to skills in carpentry and transportation that would shape his civilian career.
Returning home to Hawai i, Bucky carved out a life rooted in hard work and craftsmanship. He built a proud career in transportation, most notably as a member of the Hawai i movie teamsters union Local 996. He took great pride in being part of Hawai i's film and television industry, often reflecting on the friendships he made on set and the stories they carried. The work, the people, and the pace spoke to his adventurous spirit.
Bucky's greatness was defined by his quiet acts of love, loyalty, and presence that he showed every day. He found joy in the simple things; cooking meals for family, playing his ukulele in the garage, singing songs that reminded him of days gone by. Inspired by his mother, always trying new recipes and sharing food to express love.
He was a man of strong principles and deeper roots. As a father, he passed down his lessons, and legacies. He shared his love of sports with his daughters, instilling in them a competitive spirit and an unwavering pride in doing your best. His athletic legacy continues through his nieces, nephews, and grandchildren, who carry his fire and finesse onto every field and court. He believed in honest work and building things with his own hands. That belief lives on in his family's work ethic, craftsmanship, and dedication to doing things the right way.
By design, Bucky was not easy to define. He was strong-willed, sharp-minded, and deeply loving in ways that weren't always spoken but always felt. He was a protector. A provider. A presence. He was solid as a rock, the kind of man who didn't just hold his family together but shaped the ground they stood on.
He is survived by his lifelong partner, Annette Leimomi "Momi" Vierra; his daughters, Cassandra, Chelsea (Tomasi), Gayleen (Michael), and Gail (Trenton); and eleven grandchildren, who were the light of his life. He is also survived by his siblings Steven, Arthurnette "Artie," Cassandra "Cassie," Darryl, and Scott, along with a large and loving extended family of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins, as well as lifelong friends who were like family to him.
He now rests in aloha with his beloved parents, Jean Malulani Kaimuloa Ohelo and Arthur Ohelo, and his older brother, Maurice "Kalani" Ohelo.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, July 10, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at O ahu Mortuary Chapel (2162 Nuuanu Ave, Honolulu, HI 96817). In accordance with his wishes to rest with his parents, burial will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Hawai i State Veterans Cemetery (45-349 Kamehameha Hwy, Kaneohe, HI 96744).
We are proud of our dad, the life he lived, the man he was, and the legacy he leaves in all of us.
"Well done, good and faithful servant enter into the joy of your Lord."
- Matthew 25:23
