Dwight Faison got his wings and peacefully entered his eternal rest at home in Hampton, VA on Sunday, May 12, 2024. God allowed us to share his smile and love for 70 years. Dwight was born to the late John Jackson Faison, Jr. and Mary Sykes Faison on June 19, 1953, in Southampton County, VA.
Dwight accepted Christ into his life at an early age as a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Drewryville, VA. At the time of his death, he was an ordained Deacon at New Bethel Cathedral COGIC where he served faithfully. Dwight loved his church family and enjoyed attending church until his illness kept him at home.
He attended Southampton County Public Schools, beginning first grade at the old Adams Grove Elementary School and attending Drewryville District Elementary School and Riverview High School. Following the integration of public schools in Virginia, Dwight attended and graduated from Southampton County High School in 1972.
After high school, Dwight enlisted in the United States Army, where he served his country for six years in various assignments including Alaska and Germany. Following his military service, Dwight returned home to Southampton County and resumed his education at Virginia State College where he earned his bachelor's degree in elementary education. After teaching for several years, he went on to earn a master's degree in school counseling. Dwight's career in education spanned more than thirty years and included teaching at Jackson Feild Home in Jarratt, VA; Weldon, North Carolina Public Schools; and Suffolk, VA public schools where he established many professional bonds and personal friendships. He retired from Lakeland High School in Suffolk in 2017 because of his illness. Dwight loved his chosen profession and his impact on the lives of the students he served is an important part of his legacy.
In addition to his career in education, Dwight had many side jobs. He will be remembered by many as an amazing salesman. Dwight was responsible for many Southampton County citizens obtaining cable service, owning sets of encyclopedias, and improving their health through products from Enrich, now called Unicity.
Dwight held a most sincere love for family as a proud husband, son, brother, father, and grandfather. Some of Dwight's proudest joys were his son Roderick and his grandsons Jaylen and Jordan. He was a doting, active, and engaged father and grandfather who treasured his time with them.
Dwight met Mary Mangin, the love of his life, during his tenure at Lakeland High School. They dated for several years and married in 2015. They shared nine wonderful years as husband and wife and made memories of a lifetime. They enjoyed many of the same things including spending time with family and taking care of the lovely home they shared. Mary was a proud wife and loved her husband dearly; she took great care of him during his lengthy illness.
Through it all, family was at the center of Dwight's heart. Getting together with family was always an important and necessary part of his life.
Dwight was preceded in death by his mother and father; his brother John Oliver Faison; his brothers-in-law Moses Perkins (Barbara) and Col. Samuel P. Walker (Juanita); and his nephew Jay Darnell Perkins.
He leaves to cherish fond and loving memories his loving and devoted wife Mary Faison of Hampton, VA; son Roderick Faison (LaKeysha) of Hampton, VA; grandsons Jaylen and Jordan of Hampton, VA; stepdaughter Nicole Jackson-Heard (Dexter) of Chesapeake, VA; step-grandchildren Brielle, Camren, and Jordan of Chesapeake, VA; one brother, Carl Faison (Lillie) of Boykins, VA; three sisters, Barbara Perkins Rainey (George) of Virginia Beach, VA; Juanita Faison Walker of Yorktown, VA; Esther Janice Manns (Bill) of Sandston, VA.; two brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.
We miss you so very much and can hardly understand why you had to leave us. God decided to take you home, and we can have solace in knowing that you are in no more pain. We celebrate the life you lived. We love you, Dwight.

I was very saddened to hear that Dwight has passed. He was a great neighbor always willing to help. After he became sick we interacted more frequently and became friends. My family's thoughts and prayers go out to Mary and the rest of the Faison family. Let us know if there is anyway we can help or support you all, in this difficult time.

I met Dwight because he and his wife Mary bought the house across from my parents house in Hampton. I just remember him always having a smile on his face and a kind word to say to me, whenever I would go to my parents house to see them or help them in their yard. He loved working in the yard, and he and I often shared stories of our latest accomplishments and challenges with the yardwork. I lost my parents at different times over the last few years, but he and Mary were both there to offer their words of support and assistance. I will always be looking for him across the street when I go over there - and will remember that beautiful smile he always had!

I am saddened to lose my good neighbor Dwight. He was always out taking care of his lovely yard. I enjoyed our little talks. Praying for comfort for his beautiful wife Mary and Family

We played together in Adams Grove Southampton County VA. He was a short fela and I much taller but I couldn't outscore that guy in basketball. I think it was because he had a basketball goal in his yard and I didn't or it was because his mother called him in to eat before I had a chance to get even. Will miss you crazy. A.B.
