Dwight Preston Obituary

Published by Legacy from May 5 to May 9, 2025.
Dwight E. Preston, 72
Cairo, NY
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dwight (Pean) E. Preston, 72, of Cairo, NY, who peacefully passed away at his home on Saturday, May 3rd, 2025. Born on August 27, 1952, in Hornell, NY, Dwight was the son of the late Eldon and Velma (Richardson) Preston.
Dwight spent much of his childhood learning the joys of the outdoors, including hunting deer, grouse, pheasant, and fishing, all of which he enjoyed with his father and brother-in-laws. After graduating from Canisteo Central School, Dwight attended Alfred Tech. He worked for 33 years at Asplundh Brush Company as a lineman and foreman, retiring to focus on his lifelong passions. In his retirement, Dwight enjoyed fishing, hunting, building muzzleloaders, and taking rides with his beloved dog, Stella. He also cherished spending time reminiscing about the good old days with his best friend of nearly 70 years, George (Bill) Burd.
Dwight is survived by his sister, Arlene Ellison of Northfield, NJ; his children, Christine (Matthew) Lonero and Stephen Preston; and his beloved grandchildren, Norah and Evan Lonero. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Dwight was predeceased by his twin brother, Duane Preston; his sister, Carolyn Schnurle; and his two brothers-in-law, John Schnurle and Gary Ellison.
Dwight was a proud father and grandfather who had an unmatched sense of humor and a gift for storytelling. Though he could be a wonderfully grumpy old man at times, he was a kind, loving soul who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was truly one of a kind, and his memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
A celebration of Dwight's life will be held on Saturday, May 31st, 2025, at 94 Long Lane, Cairo, NY, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited to join and pay their respects during this time. Food and refreshments will be provided.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dwight's memory to the Natural Heritage Trust. Contributions can be made online at www.naturalheritagetrust.org or by sending checks to the address below:
