E.L. "Red" Brandon, 90, completed his earthly journey on June 16, 2022. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 22, 2022 at K.L. Brown Memory Chapel in Golden Springs.
Red was born in Manchester, TN, to Palmer B. Brandon and Fannie (Laughlin) Brandon. He completed his college education at Georgia Technical Institute in Atlanta, GA, where he also played on the football team. Red lived in Manchester, TN, Savannah & Atlanta, GA, and Vestavia Hills & Anniston, AL during his lifetime. His passion was playing golf, watching Braves baseball, and working in the vegetable garden. A craftsman who thrived on engineering challenges, he always enjoyed a building project, big or small. Red loved most anything sports related and volunteered coaching baseball, football and basketball with his son's teams in the Hoover youth athletic organizations. He officiated high school basketball and football for many years in the Birmingham area, and also served as President of the Green Valley Country Club (Hoover) for multiple terms.
Red was generous with his time and resources, using both to serve the communities where he lived and worked. He loved to eat at The Waffle House and it was not unusual to see him buying breakfast for a young family in his view. He served on various boards at Lakeside Baptist Church in Birmingham and Dawson Family of Faith in Homewood. He served as President of the American Subcontractors Association in Birmingham and was instrumental in starting the organization many years ago. His quiet faith in God carried him through a cancer ordeal, and a lengthy battle with diabetes with courage and patience.
Above all, Red loved his family. An older son in a family with twelve children, he is survived by two children, Grayle (Lia) of Birmingham, AL, and Wesley (Lee Ann) of Guntersville, AL; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lynn (Jane) of Rome, GA, and Fred (Carlynn) of Lexington, KY; along with several nieces and nephews.
