Earl Powell Bryant, 83, of Selma, died Monday Jan. 5, 2025.
Funeral services will be Friday, Jan 9, 2026 at 11 a.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church in Sardis with Brother Gary Powell officiating. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Prattville, with Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home of Selma directing. Visitation will be at the funeral home in Selma on Thursday evening from 5:00-7:00 p.m.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Earl and Marie Powell Bryant.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Pattie H. Bryant, of Selma, daughter, Missy B. (Marty) Roney, of Prattville; cousin John, (Elizabet) Powell, of Jacksonville, Fla. and a host of nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Earl was a graduate of Carlowville School, where his mother was a teacher. He was a standout athlete on the baseball and basketball teams. He was also a student school bus driver, covering one of the longest routes in the county. He often drove teams to athletic events.
Earl was a lifelong member of Shiloh Baptist Church where he professed his Christian faith at an early age. He served his state and nation as a member of the Alabama Army National Guard.
In his professional career he worked as an accountant at Standard Forge and Axle in Montgomery and a purchasing agent with Dan River Mills and American Candy Co. in Selma.
Pattie and Earl traveled extensively together in their marriage going to the four corners of the continental United States and a foray into Canada.
He never seemed to meet a stranger. His easy-going personality and infectious sense of humor was on display throughout his life. A voracious reader, he enjoyed mystery novels and whodunits, and watching sports of any kind on television.
Earl loved God, family, friends and Alabama Crimson Tide football. He doted on Pattie and Missy and fully accepted Marty into the family. He was always one of the first people to offer help or support when he saw a need.
His memory will cherished by family and friends.
Pallbearers will be Hugh Stickland, Cecil Wayne Strickland, Jamie Lewis, Ray Roberts, Zeb Daniels and Medford Pharr. Honorary pallbearers will be Ricky Hartsfield, Robby Hartsfield, Brett Johnson, Phillip Cherry and Curtis Mott.
