Earnest (Ernie) Chester Lyons, 96, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away peacefully with family and friends by his side on March 15, 2023. He was born December 30, 1926 in Trenton, Missouri, the son of Hazel E. (Porter) Deahl, and father Frank E. Lyons. Predeceased in death was a sister Elnora May.

Earnest proudly served active-duty military during WWII in the United States Navy, 1944-1946 as an

Aviation Radioman on a three-man Avenger airplane also known as the TBM Avenger Torpedo Bomber. After his Military Service, he returned to Kansas City where he began working in the Composing Room of the Kansas City Star Newspaper and continued his employment for 47 years as a printer.

It was in Kansas City where he met and married Wilma Ruth McHargue. They had two children, Elnora Ruth and Earnest Carmen. He was extremely proud of his family including; his three granddaughters: Amanda, Angela, and Melissa and ten great-grandchildren, Scott, Phillip, Kevin, Monica, Kaden, Dominick, Severin, Trevor, Kalina, and Brexton. He enjoyed country music but would never miss an opportunity to attend concerts where one or more members of the family was participating.

Earnest cherished moments with family, friends and neighbors. With an open personality, there were no strangers around him. He reveled in good times with a great sense of humor. He was grateful for his community and the many thoughtful and caring neighbors he interacted with: whether it be engaged in a good conversation, working on a project, either theirs or his, usually his, and especially all the wonderful food they would bring him. He made sure to return their containers, for refills.

Throughout his life, he was fortunate enough to enjoy a variety of activities. Some of his favorite activities included camping, fishing, playing the lottery, gardening, and playing cards, Since early childhood he had a passion for animals, especially dogs. This was evident by the number of dogs he lovingly cared for.

As he was ending his earthly journey, it appears fate brought him to the Addington Place of Shoal Creek senior care facility. Although many of the staff experienced the effects his illness had on him, most were also able to see the true, kind hearted person he really was. The affection and compassion he was showered with will forever be remembered and appreciated by his family. It was readily known throughout the facility how much of a sweet tooth he had. This craving was often addressed from within as was his notorious, "I'm hungry requests. Additionally, whether it be someone sharing a conversation, a dance or joining in on a song, Ernie bonded with a large number of the dedicated staff providing him with as good of an end of life as possible, based upon the advanced stages of his illness.

The family would also like to thank the staff at Ascend Hospice for their role during this difficult transition period.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Terrace Park Funeral Home on Thursday, March 23, 2023, with visitation beginning at 12:00pm, funeral at 1:00pm, and burial following.
