Rocky Mount, NCDr. Eddie Lee. Barnes, 89, of
Rocky Mount, North Carolina transitioned on September 20, 2023. Dr. Barnes was the husband of the late, Pastor Mary P. Barnes.
Eddie Lee Barnes was born into this life on January 26, 1934 as the eighth child to the union of Ernest "Piggy" Barnes, Sr. and Mary Suggs Barnes in Edgecombe County, N.C. He attended Edgecombe County schools and
graduated from GW Carver High School in
Pinetops, N.C. After studying with the Amora Deliverance Theological Institute, he was awarded the Bachelor of Theology in Biblical Studies. Followed by his Doctorate of Divinity.
In 1958, he joined the U.S. Army in where he trained and worked as a Medical Specialist. His Asian tours of service where he was stationed included Japan, Thailand, Korea and a war tour in Vietnam working in the field hospitals as a Medic. Some of the fond memories his nieces and nephew shared was how he always bought them fantastic souvenirs from everywhere he travelled overseas. His stateside tours included bases in Hawaii, North Carolina, and Virginia. Near the end his of career with the military, he spent one last tour in Germany before retiring back home to Rocky Mount, N.C. He was very proud of his military career which spanned more than 20 years. During his span of time with the military he acquired many medals, commendations and Honors including a special letter from the President of the United States. Among them was the National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Good Conduct Medal (6 times awarded). He inspired and coached many of the young men in his church as they went on to perform their duties as soldiers. After retiring from the military, he went on to his next love and hobby working as a diesel mechanic and driving buses with the Coastal Plain Bus Company for another 20 years. During this time, he performed his duties as an ordained minister where he served beside his wife as co-Pastor. He was a soft-spoken gentle giant who supported the ministry by using his soft voice for many years to be the announcer on "The Hour of Deliverance" broadcast on the former WEED radio station. Though he was not one you heard from the pulpit all the time, he always supported his wife in the background by supplying all her needs for the ministry.
EDDIE was preceded in death by his loving wife and Pastor, Dr. Mary E. Barnes, his parents Ernest "Piggy "Barnes Sr. and Mary Suggs Barnes. His granddaughter Jessica K. Barnes. Six sisters, Mary Agnes Barnes, Louella Barnes, Sylvia Dancy, Catherine Williams, Georgianna Barnes and Lillie Mae Barnes. His two brothers, James Barnes and Ernest Barnes, Jr.
EDDIE leaves to cherish his loving memories his daughters, Jennifer Annette Avent (Dennis) of Red Oak, N.C. and Angelas Patrice Taylor (Michael) of
Elm City, N.C. A loving sister, Mattie Ruth Collins of
Macclesfield, N.C. Six grandchildren: Jody M. Avent of Virginia, Robin Silver (Terrell) of Rocky Mount, N.C. Brian Avent (Melony) of
Nashville, N.C. Dawn Albritton (Mark) of
Greensboro, N.C., Michael "Trey" Taylor, Shania Taylor of Rocky Mount, N.C. and Eight Great Grandchildren: Mary, Marcus, Coryan, Nathaniel, Melayah, Christina, Lauryn, Leah and Joshua. His very special nieces and nephew: Ella Ruth Hopkins, James "Slick" Collins and Marcenia Cofield. A caring foster daughter, Loretta Dupree. A host of other nieces, nephews. The ministers and members of the Rocky Mount Deliverance Evangelistic Center family as well as his military buddies and many more friends.
A Visitation will be held for Dr. Barnes on Wednesday, September 27, 2023 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Rocky Mount chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. Funeral services will take place on Thursday, September 28, 2020 at Rocky Mount Deliverance Center located at 1328 Dogwood Street in
Rocky Mount, North Carolina beginning at 1:00 pm. The Interment will immediately follow the service in the Gardens of Gethsemane.
