Mrs. Eddie Jean Smith, aged 74 of Odessa, TX, was called home to Glory on August 27, 2025, in Lubbock, TX.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at 1pm, at St. Matthew Baptist Church in Odessa, TX. Arrangements are being handled by Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Mrs. Eddie Jean Smith was born in Kemper County, Mississippi to Mose and Everlean Thompson on April 22, 1951. She attended Kemper County Schools. After graduating high school, she moved to Houston, TX where she met and married her beloved husband, Richard C. Smith, Jr., on September 14, 1974. Their union was blessed with two children, Jeana and Richard, III.
She worked as a legal secretary for Ector County for almost 40 years. In addition to this, she was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, as well as a faithful member of St. Matthew Baptist Church serving with the youth, choir, mission, and on the kitchen committee. Mrs. Smith was known for her bright and contagious smile, her joking manner, and willingness to serve others. She often quoted Psalm 100:1 “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands!”, and she always had a song of praise on her heart.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, one brother, and her husband, the late Richard C. Smith, Jr.
Mrs. Eddie Jean Smith leaves to cherish her memories: her children, Jeana (Evan) Bowden, Richard, III (Dannyaal), sisters Lola Bates of Houston, TX, Lela (Clinton) Bates of Porterville, MS, Teresa Thompson of Houston, TX, brother Willie (Chris) Thompson of Houston, TX; one grandson, Richard, IV; and a number of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
The family of Eddie Jean Smith wishes to extend our sincere appreciation to the hospital staff at MCH Odessa, Carillon Lubbock, Covenant Hospital Lubbock, St. Matthew Baptist Church Odessa, and all family and friends who provided support during this time.
