EDGAR ALLEN POE, 72, of Charleston, West Virginia, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2025. Known to family and friends as Ed, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, attorney, and mentor whose life reflected both intellectual rigor and deep personal warmth.
Born in Wheeling, West Virginia, to Edgar Allen Poe and Damaris Dale Poe (nee Dentzer), Ed grew up in a close-knit, family-oriented community that nurtured both his academic promise and his artistic spirit. A graduate of Triadelphia High School, he excelled academically and on the stage where he acted, directed, and supported productions. His early years also included achievements in bowling, skiing, and a budding curiosity that would later define his professional and academic pursuits.
Ed's love of learning carried him to the University of Virginia, where he graduated with distinction with a Bachelor of Arts in Religion. He went on to earn a Master of Arts in Religion and Literature from the University of Chicago Divinity School and, later, a Juris Doctor from the West Virginia University College of Law. During law school, Ed distinguished himself as a member of the Law Review, the Moot Court Board, the Order of the Barristers, and as Chairman of the International Moot Court Team.
Following graduation, Ed served in prestigious clerkships with the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals before beginning what would become a lifelong career in insurance defense law. In 1999, he joined Pullin, Fowler, Flanagan, Brown & Poe, where his sharp legal mind, steadfast dedication to clients, and consummate mentorship of young attorneys left an enduring mark.
Outside the courtroom, Ed was a student and practitioner of Tae Kwon Do. He trained at the S. H. Kang Tae Kwon Do Academy in South Charleston, where he served as both student and legal counsel, and was an active member of the United States Tae Kwon Do Won. His martial arts discipline reflected the same humility, perseverance, and quiet strength that guided his daily life.
Above all, Ed cherished his family, who brought him immeasurable joy and fulfillment. He is survived by his loving wife, Molly Underwood Poe; his daughter and son-in-law, Moraine and Ruben Argueta, and their children Ruben Alexander and Joaquin; his sons, Adam Baronner Poe and Samuel Townsend Poe; and his stepchildren, Sarah Lillian Campbell and William Benjamin Campbell. He will also be deeply missed by his beloved pets, especially his golden retriever, Sir Walter Raleigh, a loyal companion of 13 years.
Ed will be remembered as a man of intellect, integrity, and kindness one who carried a love for the law, the arts, and family throughout his life. His colleagues will remember him as a dedicated advocate and trusted friend, while his family will forever treasure his gentle wisdom, unwavering support, and the laughter he brought into their lives.
