Edith Landry Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by La Paloma Funeral Services East - Las Vegas on Jul. 23, 2024.
December 30, 1946–July 4, 2024
Although she lived a quiet life, Edith Jean Landry went out with a bang on July 4th, 2024, just as the fireworks began for the night. She died at age 77, peacefully in her home of 36 years, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Edith Jean was born December 30, 1946, in Torrance, California, to Kenneth Frederick Osthimer and Marguerite Jean Osthimer, née Lair. Her parents divorced when she was young, and she moved with her mother, older brother, and grandparents to Las Vegas where she grew up helping around the motel her grandparents owned.
In January 1966 she traveled from Las Vegas to Louisiana to marry the Marine she had fallen in love with, Paul Joseph Landry. They had met while he was stationed at Nellis Air Force Base. She moved to many places as a military wife, starting at Key West, Florida, then to Parris Island, South Carolina; Fort Louis, Washington; Landsberg, Germany; Lawton, Oklahoma; and Clarksville, Tennessee, adding children Wade, Wanda, and Bonnie along the way. When Paul retired from the military in 1987, the family settled in Las Vegas. Edith was again at home in the desert she loved. After divorcing in 2000, she remained in the home in Las Vegas, living occasionally with a roommate, but mostly alone, which suited her just fine.
Few people really knew Edith. It took time to develop a friendship with her, but those who put in the time were rewarded with her wealth of knowledge, unique perspective, and delighted laugh. When she didn't have her nose stuck in a book, she was often found at the kitchen table either putting together a jigsaw puzzle, playing solitaire with real cards, or working on a sewing project. Edith found joy in the simple things in life: a good book, oatmeal cookies with raisins and lots of walnuts, long talks with loved ones, and the clear sky over the desert. She had great faith in God and spent many years serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a woman of strong convictions and deep emotions, and she loved her family fiercely. For those who knew her, she will be greatly missed.
Her body will be cremated, and the family held a private memorial on July 20, 2024.
