Edith Margules Obituary

Edith "Edie" Kohl Margules, 76, beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend, passed away on September 27, 2025. She was born on August 2, 1949, at Boston Lying In Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, to Tilly Franks Kohl and Harry Kohl.

A proud graduate of Brookline High School, Class of 1967, and Farleigh Dickinson University, where she earned a degree in Elementary Education in 1971. Edie built a life grounded in perseverance, warmth, and loyalty.

It was in Brookhouse, Boston, where Edie met the love of her life, Kenneth, in the most charming of ways, when he "borrowed" her magazines so she would knock on his door. Their first date to Rockport, Massachusetts, sparked a lifelong partnership. The couple married on March 11, 1979, and soon moved to Chicago, where Edie became the backbone of Kenneth's growing medical practice. Together, they built a thriving network of six offices serving northern Illinois, with Edie's tireless dedication at its heart for more than 45 years.

Despite her life in Illinois, Edie never forgot her Boston roots. She renewed her Massachusetts driver's license the day before leaving for Chicago and always kept a Boston sports cap close at hand, famously insisting that "there was no postseason if a Boston team wasn't involved."

Edie was a woman of remarkable spirit and drive. A competitive figure skater, she reached the Elite Eight at the 1980 Olympic tryouts, skating against legends like Peggy Fleming. She carried that fierce determination into every part of her life, whether battling it out at Scrabble, insisting on driving a taller car so she could "be taller than everyone else on the road," or refusing to let fear or illness deter her. She celebrated her 39th birthday soaring in a glider, her 40th in a hot air balloon, skydiving in her 50s and 60s, and shared with her family her love of travel, exploring more than 50 countries, including a memorable trip to East Berlin.

Passionate about her heritage and community, Edie was a devoted advocate for Jewish causes and mental health charities. A long-time attendee of Congregation Beth Judea, she found strength and connection in her faith community, which reflected the values she lived every day. She was truly the foundation of her family, instilling in her children resilience, curiosity, and a zest for life.

Edie is survived by her loving husband, Kenneth; her sons, Andrew and David; her brothers Ralph and Edward (Shelley); and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved son, Thomas. She is also predeceased by her sister-in-law, Marcia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Edie's memory to Magen David Adom at www.mdais.org/en/donate.

Private family service.

Edie's fierce spirit, generous heart, and unwavering devotion to family and community will be remembered and cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
