Edith Sybil "Cookie" Payne

Edith Sybil Cooke "Cookie" Payne Edith Sybil Cooke "Cookie" Payne, 86, passed away on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, after a brief stay at University of Virginia Medical Center. Born on February 8, 1926, she had resided in Charlottesville throughout her life. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Hollis Alton Payne, a Charlottesville native; and a younger sister, Doris Melton from Ruther Glen, Virginia. Sybil is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to specifically acknowledge her niece, Suzy Cook Layman, who has lovingly looked after her and Hollis for the last several years. Sybil was preceded in death by her parents, Luther Samuel and Helen Quick Cooke, who also lived in this area throughout their lives. The second of four children, she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Samuel Cook Jr. and David Franklin Cooke. Both Sybil and Hollis have lived in Charlottesville all their lives. Although they had no children of their own, Sybil provided day care for over 40 years for many children in her home. A quiet, loving person, Sybil lived her entire life caring for others and was a devoted and doting wife to Hollis. The family also acknowledges the many wonderful friends and neighbors who have looked in on Sybil and Hollis over the forty plus years that they have resided on St. Clair Avenue. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Friday, May 11, 2012, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2012, at the Hill and Wood Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Wingfield officiating. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens on Route 29 North. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.hillandwood.com.
