Edith Steingisser Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dee Funeral Home & Cremation Service - Concord on Feb. 13, 2026.
Edith Steingisser, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, lived a full life of 95 years until her death on February 7th, 2026 at Hebrew Rehabilitation Center in Boston. Edith was loved by friends and family whom she embraced and accepted with an attentive ear and always a hug.
Edith was born in East of St. Louis. She grew up in Madison Illinois where her parents owned a small town department store. Her 2 older sisters (Nadine and Leanor) and brother (Jack) helped parents to run the store. Always a hard worker she developed a very serious work ethic that she carried all of her life of almost 10 decades. She cared deeply for her family members being the youngest of 2 older sisters and a brother.
Edie attended University of Illinois and met her husband Donald at a college dance. They were married 64 years until his death in 2015. They raised their 2 sons and 2 dachshunds residing in Huntington, Long Island, New York. The dachshunds also loved her cooking and care.
Edith was an office manager of Dvirka and Bartilucci Consulting Engineers, Woodbury, NY, a premier, multidisciplinary engineering and environmental firm managing sustainable municipal infrastructure. She was a woman with a strict moral compass steering a path of righteous ecological solutions in the 1960's until the present time. She also helped husband Don in his business designing commercial and residential buildings, building synagogues and contemporary homes on Long Island. The last part of her career she worked in the office of her Lake Worth Florida condominium community as a friendly community mediator.
Following several decades as a Lake Worth Florida resident, Edie was convinced following the death of her husband Don to move closer to family in Boston. Edie spent her last few years as a resident of 2Life Communities in Newton. She was well respected and liked her community though she perpetually wore a long down coat barely accommodating to the Boston non-tropical climate.
She loved nurturing plants and was an avid gardener. She was a lawn and garden warrior raking up piles of leaves in the autumn season, producing homestyle delicious barbeques around her poolside home built by her architect husband Don, a Frank Lloyd Wright protégé. Edith also loved knitting and creating home made greeting cards. There was forever a special occasion with a homemade kitschy adorable greeting card.
Edith's greatest strength was listening attentively. She had a nurturing concern for every single family member. Conversations always began with "Are you alright?!!" No one will ever be more concerned about you than Edith, and no one will ever doubt that as a fearless survivor, she had to protect you and care for you like none other.
Valuable lessons she taught us: respect children, listen play and unconditionally love them; do not refuse an invitation to play any game especially Rummikub, mahjong and bridge. She was an avid cook who taught us all the joys of garlic infused creations and cherry pie. No holiday was ever complete without a homemade cherry pie. A large bottle of jujyfruit, her favorite candy was always present on her kitchen counter. Whenever we see those colorful, chewy gumdrops, we will think of her.
She is survived by son Lee Steingisser and wife Candace, their children Jason and Michel Steingisser, and Jason's children, Ronan, Aidan and Roisin. Her second son Steven Ray Steingisser died in 2005 who predeceased his wife Lois Steingisser.
Funeral Services will be privately arranged. There will be a Memorial gathering at the Steingisser home in celebration of Edith and her long purposeful life.
