Edith Turner Obituary

Visit the Shalom Memorial Funeral Home - Arlington Heights website to view the full obituary.
Edith Turner, nee Singer, 96. Beloved wife for 68 wonderful years to the late Amos; devoted mother of Helene Turner, Nancy (David) Jacobson, and David (Christina) Turner; cherished Nana of Eric (Ashley) Jacobson, Michelle (Andrew) Salomone, Nicholas Turner, and Alexander Turner; adored great-grandmother of Alice, Joseph, Aria, and Simon; loving sister of the late Alice (the late Albert) Genis; treasured aunt, dedicated cousin of the late Elliot (the late Doris) Mirman, the Chicago, New York and Israeli cousins and loyal friend of many.

Edith was adored by all who knew her. Surviving the Holocaust with her mother, sister, and father, the Singer family remained one step ahead of death from 1941 until the end of the World War II. They used wits, strength, luck, and an undeniable will to survive, eventually joining a partisan group in the forests of Belarus circa 1943. Leaving the Soviet-held area to American controlled Germany in 1946, Edith eventually moved to the United States meeting her beloved husband, Amos, on the boat coming to America, arriving on Labor Day 1950. In addition to working as a medical librarian, Edith served many leadership roles in both North Shore and Highland Park Hadassah including as President. She loved being a part of the North Suburban Synagogue Beth El community. Edith was very politically active, often writing letters to newspapers, magazines, and high-ranking politicians themselves. She even once received a response from the then Prime Minister of Israel. She spoke five languages, loved to dance, to eat and prepare good food, to celebrate the simchas of life, and most of all, her family, which was the most important thing to her, always. She will be very missed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hadassah, www.hadassah.org. Funeral service Monday, March 9, 12 Noon at North Suburban Synagogue Beth El, 1175 Sheridan Road, Highland Park. Interment to follow at Shalom Memorial Park in Arlington Heights. For a link to view the service, shiva information, and to leave condolences: www.shalommemorial.org, 847-255-3520.
