Edith "Edie" Mae Worrells (91 years of age) passed away, surrounded by her loving family, on December 18, 2025, following a short illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Freddy C. Worrells; her parents, Frank and Myrtle Israel; her daughter-in-law, Diane Worrells; and her brother, Donald Israel.
Edie was born on August 23, 1934, to her parents, Frank Otis and Myrtle Mae Israel. She was one of five children.
She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1952. She went on to marry the love of her life, Freddy Clyde Worrells. Though Freddy passed at a young age, they were blessed with three sons: Randall, Richard, and Robert.
Edie worked at JC Penney, Montgomery Wards, and Beckley National Bank. While working, she pursued higher education in the field of education.
Once she completed her education, she began teaching in the public school system, eventually moving into a teaching position at the former Beckley College.
While at Beckley College, she continued her education, pursuing a master’s degree and, lastly, a doctoral degree. She moved to Dunbar, WV, to pursue a teaching opportunity at West Virginia State University, where she retired as vice president of academic affairs. She served in many roles at the university, such as the WVSCTC representative to the Institutional Board of Advisors and was active in WVSCTC as well as working for many years with Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.
Moving back to Beckley, WV, Edie continued to enjoy retirement. She especially had a love of line dancing and joined a group that performed together. She also loved traveling to the beach, working in the fresh air, and visiting with family.
Edie is survived by her sons: Randall, Richard (Melody), and Robert (Debbie). Her grandchildren are Stephanie Ross (Andrew), Megan Marohl (Doug), Mendy Helvey (Michael), Kevin Worrells (Brianne), Tyler Worrells (Amanda), and Sydney Bowman (Ethan). Surviving siblings include Darrel Israel, Rev. Bud Israel, and Esther Akers. Edith also is survived by eight great-grandchildren.
Services are entrusted to Calfee Funeral Home on Saturday, January 3, 2026. Friends may call from 12:00 p.m.- 1:00pm, with services at 1:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Kelly Bowman. Family members will serve as pallbearers. A private burial will follow for family members.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice of Beckley in memory of Edie.
