Edna "LaVerne" (Horton) Hackerott, of Plainville, KS, passed away on October 15, 2023, at the Redbud Village in Plainville, at the age of 101. She was born on October 18, 1921, to Harry and Ruth (Henry) Workman in Plainville. She married Troy Lee Horton on September 10, 1939. To this union four children were born: Jack, Linda, Barbara and Curtis. Troy passed away on January 14, 1972. On August 17, 1974, LaVerne married Gordon Lowell Hackerott and she was blessed with four stepchildren: Roger, Larry, Roberta and Mary. Gordon passed away on March 20, 2001.
LaVerne worked at the Plainville Hospital for many years and retired from there. She was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Natoma, KS. She enjoyed cooking, computer games, word puzzles, lawn work, and embroidery.
Preceding LaVerne in death are her parents, Harry and Ruth Workman; husbands, Troy Horton and Gordon Hackerott; sisters, Eva Ross, Marjorie Jones, and Thelma Conway; brother, Oren Workman; daughters, Linda Mathies and Barbara Mills; and granddaughters, Jordanna Hackerott and Tara Horton.
Her survivors include two sons, Jack (Carolyn) Horton of Golden, CO and Curtis (Debra) Horton of Beloit, KS; son-in-law, Charles Mathies of Manhattan, KS; four stepchildren, Roger (Glenna) Hackerott of Russell, KS, Larry (Diane) Hackerott of Hays, KS, Roberta (Bernard) Ptaschek of Florida, and Mary (Tom) Casey of Hays, KS; 23 grandchildren; 31-plus great-grandchildren; 29 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at 2PM at the First Lutheran Church in Plainville. Visitation will be the same day, 1PM until service time. Burial will follow in the Plainville City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Redbud Village and Peace Lutheran Church and may be sent to Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home, 320 SW 2nd St, Plainville, KS 67663.
