Edward Asma Obituary

Edward J. Asma

1937-2021

Edward Asma, 83, of Salem passed away on Saturday March 6, 2021 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Edward was born on December 25, 1937 in Waukegan, IL.

Edward Asma started golfing later in life, and he loved it. He proved weekly that you can love something and never get better at it. But the things he both loved and truly excelled at included being a great husband to his wife Carol, being a remarkable father to his sons Dave, Steve, and Dan, being a loyal brother to Bob and Tom, and being a doting grandfather to Garrison, Maddy, Keaton, Julien, and Jackson.

He grew up in Waukegan, Illinois. His father James died when Ed was young, leaving him to be the "man of the house" at a very early age. He seemed destined for the priesthood until he discovered motorcycles, 57 Chevys, and his future wife Carol. He raised three sons who loved, feared, and looked up to him. He was a big man, physically and spiritually. He seemed impervious. A stoic by nature and by choice, you could always count on him in an emergency.

He worked at U.S. Steel until retirement and took up a second career as a maintenance engineer at Immaculate Conception Parish. A rare breed of man, Big Ed knew how to fix or build anything. He was always present in his life and knew the value of friends. An assortment of extended family and friends are now left to wildly embellish Ed's beautiful accomplishments.

He loved fishing, the White Sox, the Green Bay Packers, Mozart, Victory at Sea, and WWII history. He was an avid reader, and he relaxed by making things, including HO Railroad dioramas, model planes, and an infinite number of puzzles. Mostly, he loved spending time with his family.

Ed's family would like to offer tremendous gratitude to the remarkable staff at the Aurora medical community.

In keeping with Ed's wishes cremation has taken place, and a celebration of his life will occur at a later date with family and close friends.

Oh, Mr. Asma, what a great guy. You always struck me as a down to earth, no nonsense, but fun and young spirited. I was a friend of Dan’s, growing up at IC. I always thought Dan was so lucky to have you as his dad. All my love to the Asma family. My heart breaks for your loss.
