Edward R. Bednarz, 91, passed away early the morning of December 16, 2025. Born July 25, 1934, in Chicago; later of Hegewisch.
A 1952 graduate of Chicago Vocational School, Edward studied plastics and was a member of the 1952 CVS city-championship basketball team. He also played on the school’s baseball team. Following graduation he served honorably in the U.S. Navy.
After his military service Edward worked for many years at Republic Steel while founding and operating B & C Janitorial Services, a commercial cleaning company he built from the ground up. Colleagues and clients valued his dependability and practical approach to business, and he maintained long friendships in the community over the decades.
He was the father of Diane (Donald) Ranos, Christine Wolf, Jeanne (Steve) Jones, Loreen (Robert) Crocker, and Robert (Jillian) Bednarz. His grandchildren are Pamela Horbach, Kimberly Brown, Lisa Bowen, Dana Wolf, Matthew Wolf, Kalli Bednarz, Hannah Jones, Kateland Jones, Tyler Armstrong, and Ryan Armstrong. He was a great-grandfather to Blake Horbach, Brooklyn Horbach, Lucas Brown, Caleb Brown, Jaxson Bowen, and Carson Bowen. He is survived by his sister, Joan Berry, and by numerous nieces, nephews, and longtime friends.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Josephine Bednarz; his wife, Clarice Bednarz (born Cipowski); and his daughter, Ruth Bednarz.
Mass will be held in Hegewisch on Monday, January 5, 2026. The family will receive visitors at the St. Florian Church prior to Mass; there will be no visitation at a funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a charity of the donor’s choice.
