Edward J. Booker, 80 passed away on Saturday, September 10th, 2022 at CareOne Nursing Home in Wall, NJ. He was born in Farmsville, VA and has lived in Neptune for around 60 years.
He was not allowed to finish high school due to segregation laws. He received his GED later in life. Edward also received an honorary diploma from Prince Edward County High School in June 2003. He was one of about 400 black students, part of the group known as the "lost generation", who were denied public education by Prince Edward County, Virginia from 1959-1964; the only county in the nation to close its public schools rather than integrate them.
Edward, known to most as "Eddie" drove trucks for a few years before starting his career as a clerk at the US Postal service in Neptune where he work for 38 years before retiring in 2009.
Eddie was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Neptune for many years where he served as a Trustee and sang with the male choirs. Eddie was a member of the JT Newman Elks Lodge #998 Improved Benevolent Protector Order of Elks of the world since 1979. He was an officer and served on several committee, most notably the charity and welfare committee.
His love for bowling took him across the country to bowling tournaments with the Raiders Team before retiring from the sport. In his younger years he played baseball and softball as he got older he became a loyal fan of the baseball team, the NY Mets.
He was predeceased by his parents Annie Mae and Leroy Booker, his brother David Booker and his sister known as "Peaches". He is survived by his wife, Hazel L. Booker, of 58 years, brother Clarence Wells, stepson Aubrey Monroe, son Edward B. Booker ( Toi Booker), daughter Melissa L. Jenkins (Lester Jenkins), grandchildren (Shyniece Booker-Meacham, Jayhahn Booker, Leah Roundtree, Jada Jenkins, Daja Owens and Elijah Spikes) great-grands (Zahmiya, Kaleelah and Heaven Meacham), aunt Sarah Johnson, sister-in-law Betty Monroe, brother-in-law, Charlie Cotton (Elsie), brother-in-law James Gillespie (Cookie), cousin Carletha Robinson (and son) and a host of nieces and nephews.
