Edward C. Engisch, age 96 years, of Kingwood Township, NJ, died Sunday, October 23, 2022, at his home.
Born in Elizabeth, NJ, October 10, 1926, son of the late William G. and Minnie Housley Engisch, he had formerly resided in Whitehouse, NJ 1952-1995 and had resided in Kingwood Township, since 1995.
Ed was a World War II veteran who enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17, after his older brother, Lieutenant William T. Engisch was killed while serving his country during wartime in France. Ed served aboard a minesweeper, the U.S.S Swift in waters off Japan and China. He and his fellow crew members had to abandon ship when the Swift succumbed to damage and sank. He also served on the U.S.S. Adams. Ed was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for distinguished meritorious service in sea operations during World War II in the American Theater of Operations.
Following his return from military service, he farmed with his brother, George, in Readington Township. He later worked as a machinist for Transomatic Corp of America in Flemington, NJ. He was also employed by Whitecap Preserves, Inc, Whippany, NJ doing factory maintenance and repairs. He then was employed by Stobb, Inc. in Clinton, NJ and lastly by Johanna Farms doing factory maintenance and repairs. After retirement, Ed began driving a school bus for the Hunterdon Central Regional High School District in 1992 and continued until 2009.
Ed enjoyed spending time with family and working with his hands. He was involved in building his own home in Whitehouse Station and spent much of his time doing his own home repairs, property improvements, and tending to his vegetable garden. He got great satisfaction while riding on his garden tractor mowing his lawn.
He was a former member of the Kingwood United Methodist Church and was also a member of the Masons.
His wife, Marion Del Barre Engisch, died in 2015 and his daughter, Kathleen Engisch McGourty, died in 2016. He was also pre-deceased by his three brothers, William T. Engisch, George W. Engisch and Richard A. Engisch.
Surviving are a son, William E. Engisch and his wife Barbara, of Kingwood Township, NJ; eight grandchildren, Amy Dallaire, Carie Totaro, Lori Kane, John David McGourty, Bonnie Aggacio, Kristin McRae, William E. Engisch, Jr. and Brian Engisch; and twenty great-grandchildren: Isabelle, Gabrielle, Camille, Celia, Zoe, Gwyneth, Evelyn, Liam, Ty, Tessa, Caden, Grace, John, Maeve, Nicholas, Christopher, Landon, Charlotte, Eric and Jackson; as well as his son-in-law, John McGourty.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, November 12, 2022, at 10:00 AM in the Flemington United Methodist Church, Corner of Main Street & Maple Avenue, Flemington, NJ.
